I acknowledge there are several ways Kate's albums could be split into "eras" and this is just one way, which we'll use for this poll.

Rank these eras in the order you enjoy them:

A. The Kick Inside/Lionheart

B. Never For Ever/The Dreaming

C. Hounds of Love/The Sensual World/The Red Shoes

D. Aerial/50 Words for Snow

going with a Kate marathon after we finish listening to Valentyne Suite. I just asked Raff and she had a hard time pinpointing a favorite for her. A good sign ehhh.. mark of quality. unlike many that peak out of the gate and ride that wave into mediocrity.

Raff had a hard time with favorite song?  or era?
I enjoyed her review of that rootsy folkey album on her blog.  Enjoyed the music too.  Good stuff.

she drew a blank on all of them, favs period. Era, album, song. Too many great ones to choose..

of course I strategically asked her when I was getting a bitch out for my smoking..(get those every couple of weeks)  so she might have been distracted LOLHeart

Precisely 1 Lion Heart, 2 The Dreaming, 3 Never For ever, 4 The Kick Inside ... then not far, but not too close, Hounds Of Love, The Sensual World and 50 Words For Snow.

Difficult to say beyong choice A (undeniably ahead of the rest), and period D (which I've only heard bits)

also partly because Jim threw Hounds of Love with the later 80's albums instead of the early 80's.

Most likely, if HoL had been in B instead of C, I'd go for B.... but I will abstain.

Well the best one is easy -
C. Hounds of Love/The Sensual World/The Red Shoes

The rest is tougher, I could have swapped B and D but The Dreaming just tips it in B's favour -
B. Never For Ever/The Dreaming
D. Aerial/50 Words for Snow
A. The Kick Inside/Lionheart

For me Lionheart is clearly her worst effort, the typical rushed second album, not that many good songs on it. Still, it's all comparative.

Pierre, your first four match mine pretty much....nice to see there are a few Lionheart devotees around here.  Smile

B is best by far, these are my no. 1 and 2 Kate Bush albums. The others are close. I'd say DAC (C without Red Shoes would be higher).

Hi,

Goes backwards for me."50 Words for Snow" is her finest work ever, and its freedom and song design is incredible, but will not quite be in a listing, I wonder because, we're so ingrained in pop song and its format that to hear something so different and as well put together as it is, is simply hard for us all. In general, that is as progressive as progressive can be but I am not sure that a "woman" will ever get that credit as she could or should.

All of her work is valuable and wonderful, going back to the very first album, but if all we see is a bunch of pop songs, then, not many folks are going to appreciate the last album. But if we look at her work totality, and how the more recent album was designed and defined, the only thing we can say is that we can not "get" the newer album, and we're going back to our favorites.

I will always believe that an artist deserves more credit than just ... a pop song writer. This body of work shows a lot more strength and beauty than a bunch of pop songs!

Or progressive is a joke?
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ I think I follow you.  I agree her recent work is more sophisticated and mature, a deep beauty in those songs.  She would certainly place her recent work above her early work.

But my own personal appreciation is often taken with the naivety and wonder of youth.  Whether Kate or Syd Barrett, that whimsical and "breath of fresh air" that can only be ascribed to youth if one is to be honest, because we all lose it.  Older people who go for the same feeling are a forgery.  You have to actually be young to pull it off, with perhaps a few exceptions, but they are rare.  Kate did so well on those first three albums that they defy everything around them.  She created her own universe with which to play.  Despite whether one actually likes her or not, creating your own universe is truly rare.  Then to top it off, she manages to convert those songs into a stage show that mimics the wonder of the music.  Adding her own choreography and dancing ability to the "Tour of Life", which had only the benefit of those "juvenile" albums, is astounding.
