Topic: Best Produced Rush Album Posted: September 10 2016 at 13:48
Which Rush album is the best produced (/engineered/mixed/mastered, etc.)? For me I have to go with Counterparts. Far from their best album as songwriters, but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound fantastic. The guitar tones are meaty but not overpowering, the drums have some tasteful reverb to them, Geddy's bass tone is distinct yet not overly treble-heavy, and everything is mixed well with Ged's vocals sitting nicely towards the top of the mix.

Grace: Rush were rightly disappointed with Brown's "Signals" which does sound like sh*t. Flat and lifeless. Henderson came in and gave Grace this sound which someone here labeled perfectly as "icy cold", which is just what the material calls for. It's not the production you'd want on every album but it serves Grace very well.
Runner up shout-out to Caress of Steel. Always loved the warm, truly live sounding drums on that album. And the guitars sound great too.

II think which the dispute is between "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres". Although AFTK is my favorite Rush album ... "Hemispheres" production are slightly superior (mainly in cover art). In opposition the worst in sound is Signals .

Hemispheres, closely followed by Moving Pictures.
Terry Brown was a good producer overall, and I think most of his efforts with Rush are better production jobs than most post Signals albums. Counterparts is very well produced though.

I find that Hold Your Fire has a very clean sound.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"
Caress of Steel, the gritty production is one of the reasons why it's probably my favorite Rush album. Next I'd say Vapor Trails, I love the raw sound.

I like the production on COS, but VT to me sounds like it went badly wrong.
