Which Rush album is the best produced (/engineered/mixed/mastered, etc.)?
For me I have to go with Counterparts. Far from their best album as songwriters, but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound fantastic. The guitar tones are meaty but not overpowering, the drums have some tasteful reverb to them, Geddy's bass tone is distinct yet not overly treble-heavy, and everything is mixed well with Ged's vocals sitting nicely towards the top of the mix.

Grace:
Rush were rightly disappointed with Brown's "Signals" which does sound like sh*t.  Flat and lifeless.  Henderson came in and gave Grace this sound which someone here labeled perfectly as "icy cold", which is just what the material calls for.  It's not the production you'd want on every album but it serves Grace very well.

Runner up shout-out to Caress of Steel.  Always loved the warm, truly live sounding drums on that album.  And the guitars sound great too.

Great thread topic, by the way!

I only know all the albums to Roll The Bones - my favourite sound production is Moving Pictures.

Have to give the nod to Clockwork Angels for this one.

I like Grace but there are so many and I'm not as familiar with some as with others.

II think which the dispute is between "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres". Although AFTK is my favorite Rush album ... "Hemispheres" production are slightly superior   (mainly in cover art). In opposition the worst in sound is Signals .

I always liked the way 'Permanent Waves' sounded.....but then many of them sound good to me on that level .

Totally agree with OP! COUNTERPARTS is probably the one that sounds best for the reasons mentioned.

Presto any time of the day, any day of the week.

Rupert Hine at his best. I like the clean and crispy sound. The piano and drums sound great. Also the (sparse) riffing and soloiing is awesome.

The Pass is perhaps the best song of Rush ever!

Hemispheres, closely followed by Moving Pictures.

Terry Brown was a good producer overall, and I think most of his efforts with Rush are better production jobs than most post Signals albums. Counterparts is very well produced though.

I find that album hard to listen to - it's just all compressed to the same volume.

"Permanent Waves" for me.

I find that Hold Your Fire has a very clean sound.

Caress of Steel, the gritty production is one of the reasons why it's probably my favorite Rush album. Next I'd say Vapor Trails, I love the raw sound.

I like the production on COS, but VT to me sounds like it went badly wrong.

I think Grace Under Pressure is their best-sounding album. Not sure if that equates with "best produced".
