Which rock band you prefer more and why?

These bands are among my favorites, but I gotta pick DP over Rush by a hair, because I prefer album DP In Rock over any Rush album.
And the album of your choice: 2112 or DP In Rock?

Rush for me.  Just taste I suppose.  I prefer their songwriting and I like Lifeson's playing much better than Blackmores.  Prefer Geddy's bass playing too.  But mostly its the songs.  DP just doesn't fire my "rock" senses like early Rush.

Yup. Rush scratches the itch. I barely notice DP at all. A few good songs but I'm definitely not a fan.

Rush are my favorite band, so...  Smoke on the Water is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head after each listen.  Always find myself humming dum dum dum  dumdumdumdum dum dum dum dumdum.  I love that riff.  And now it is stuck in my head again.  :)  DP are a great heavy classic rock band with some great musicians.  Jon Lord's organ playing is really what makes them stand out from other bands from that era.

I dunno, Deep Purple doesn't really bring anything exciting to the table for me. Rush's intricate but simple songs nail it perfectly whether you want to sit down and listen or you're listening on the go.

That sounded like an advertisement and I apologize

I think I'd have to lean towards Deep Purple on this one. Not just because Machine Head was the first rock album I ever heard, either.

As far as studio albums, each band has 2 that I consider great.

Rush - Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures
Deep Purple - In Rock, Machine Head

Then they have a few that I consider hit or miss

Rush - A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres
Deep Purple - Deep Purple, Fireball, Perfect Strangers

And then the rest I'd consider uninteresting or just plain bad (or I haven't heard them yet).

So their studio output is more or less equally weighted, with Deep Purple getting a slight edge, but what puts DP over the top is their live output. Made In Japan and In Concert are both awesome live sets, the 19-minutes Wring That Neck on In Concert being one of my favourite hard rock jams ever.

And as far as a "prog perspective" (no one asked for it, but you'll get it anyway), I'd consider Deep Purple to be the victor there as well. They had two really accomplished prog mini-epics, Child In Time and April. Whereas Rush... I think that the more elaborate they tried to get, the less satisfying their music became. Fountain of Lamneth, most of 2112, and both of the Cygnus X-1 "Books" are all duds to my ears. An exception could be made for Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science. Those ones are both quite good. But Rush's real calling was the more rock-oriented 3-7 minute tracks. The Spirit of Radio, Fly By Night, Red Barchetta... those'll wake you up in the morning, any day of the week.

DP in Rock is better than 2112 in my opinion, but i love Farewell to Kings with all of my heart.. I cant make up my mind. They are both really amazing bands. :)

I have albums by both bands but neither would get anywhere my list  of 10 favourite artists.
I have seen Deep Purple twice and it is a matter of regret that I never did see Rush when they played in the UK
Rush are probably only 2nd to Queen in terms of my favourite band that I never saw live. At least with Queen I have an excuse that I had barely started going to gigs when they toured for the last time in 1986
For me Rush do shade it over Deep Purple, although I don't think either band have done a decent album since 1984.

Hard to choose on this one. Rush is by far more complex and interesting. DP is just a great balls out rock band. Both have had their ups and downs but I think DP's downs were far lower. I dunno. An odd choice of two bands to compare. I'm stumped.

DP never really did anything for me, and I grew up in that 70's hard rock/metal era. I was really into funk/R&B during the Smoke On the Water song release, I remember, great rock riff for sure, but really nothing else stands out to me.

I really do not need to mention who I prefer. Big smile

I guess I've enjoyed Rush more over the years, so I'll vote Rush, but love Deep Purple too.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Never got DP's appeal.  Grew up on Rush.

DP were okay but they never did much for me, just another hard rock band.
I enjoyed Rush's music much more (and Lifeson was the better guitarist).
