God bless Gram Parsons and his troubled soul ...
Indeed. Never considered myself a redneck but I still get emotional today whenever I hear "We'll Sweep out the Ashes" or Emmylou Harris doing "Boulder to Birmingham".

Eagles for me.
I certainly don't appreciate either of these bands on an album basis like I would my southern rock favourites, but as far as the songs by each that I dig, the Eagles win in quantity and quality.
"Already Gone" is one of my top 10 road trip songs
when i was a kid a doller was worth ten dollers - now a doller couldnt even buy you fifty cents

Never understood the hatred Eagles gets in some quarters.
Same here. I get people who aren't into them, not to their taste, esp as the band is played a lot on radio, thus overexposure. But I don't get people who deny the talent in the areas of songwriting, vocal harmonies, and guitar playing (Felder esp). Like them or not, they did great work at their craft for a few years.

CCR were basically John Fogerty with a back up band (not a criticism, an observation).
Always the same voice and the same guitar style even later on solo albums.
Having said that, I remember the first time Suzy Q was played on the radio (yes, I'm that old) and it blew me away. I became a fan of their early work and especially liked the Green River album.
The Eagles , in my opinion, were the best "Country Rock" band of that era. Their musicianship was excellent and their two and three part vocals were incredible. I can't name just one favorite song because there were many. To this day the dual guitars on Hotel California will make me stop what I'm doing and listen.
From Wikipedia:
Eagles, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 album chart on its first week of release, and reached number one in the following week, where it stayed for five weeks. It was ranked number four on the Billboard year-end album chart of 1976, but it continued to sell, and would eventually become the best-selling album of the 20th century in the United States.

I like both about equally. To me they both have some great songs and some not so great songs. Here's two instrumentals from each that most people are probably unaware of:

Redneck? oh no Bob. we are not talking about voting GOP hahah... waving the f**king Stars and Bars...fishing... owning a 100 guns.. crashing cars...managing the english language.. and lynching blacks.
country and gospel music that is OUR folk tradition. Not the sh*t that passes for country today but the traditional stuff. A conversation I long meant to have with you all on the Hey Nonny Nonny team. Perhaps best that never happened.
the one that gets me is this gem from Grievous Angel.. I so love Emmylou's voice.. but this ups the ante.. add in Linda's. Oh Linda.. in fact it was exploring Linda's roots (from the popular stuff) that led me to Gram and Emmylou.

Eagles by miles. CCR were a fun band that I enjoyed but I took Eagles way more seriously. For Eagles fans there was also a band called POCO who were very good in the same vein.

^ great album... but the best of the group???
my vote is for the first Manassas album... sublime and f**king briliant album. A shoe-in for this site if it ever went down the rabbit hole of American folk prog which it won't.. but oh... if we ever wanted some life in this site. Get back to the days when additions made us tear each other apart. We could. Make it so Folk-Prog team... Not prog one might say... yeah.. so what the f**k is so superior about English folk like Pentangle that makes them 'prog' over American folk . Great group no doubt .. no question. That they are ...english.. and yeah.. we Americans are guility of having inferiority complexes to our old colonial overloads.. but damnit man.. this is music. Being english doesn't it make it more prog..
hah... God I miss the old days of this site.. when people actually cared...and didn't hesitate to show you they did.

Stephen Stills - Oh yes!! . Was Deja Vu CSNY really so divorced from prog music or tracks similar to "Like a Hurricane" or "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young? That was great music and game changing music.
