Darn good...no, Damn good band.
I've always considered New Roman Times to be one of the best Prog albums ever made by a decidedly non-Prog group: it has the analog synths, offbeat instrumentation (mandolins, violins), the occasional tricky time signature, weird ethnic detours (Uzbekistan ska..?)...and it's a concept album to boot.
Some of their earlier stuff is quintessential '80s indie college rock (love the bowling skinheads, though, and Joe Stalin's Cadillac etc.), but when you're not looking they'll throw in a cover of Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive, just for fun.
As someone who grew up not too far from their Santa Cruz hometown I get where the attitude comes from. I wouldn't consider CVB an ideal fit for these Archives, but they're nothing if not eclectic.

I know this band only by name. Take the Skinheads Bowling sounds very retro (but still far post-Ludwig) for the mid-80's, something between early Beach Boys and early Velvet Underground.
No vote. Something between options #2 and #3, I guess.

Loved CVB back in the 80s, pretty much outgrew them in the 90s. Last time I saw them was with Modest Mouse about 10 years ago in South Dakota. Decent show, one of my teenage sons gave Victor an original vinyl 12" of 'Take the Skinheads Bowling' and he took it out back to the tour bus to have everyone sign it and also gave him his drumsticks which was a nice gesture.
I appreciate some good memories where these guys were background music and I hope they're all doing okay, but they're definitely not prog.

People who've only heard "Take the Skinheads Bowling" are missing out. Telephone Free Landslide Victory and Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart are in my collection. They're lotsa fun. TFLV is about half instrumentals that show their adeptness with a variety of ethnic musics.
