I have no idea if Wintergatan is crossover prog or maybe some other genre.
But I really am convinced they are a progband. They use peculiar instruments, some of them are crafted by themselves; they are worldfamous for it. Here is their website: http://www.wintergatan.net/#/news

They play instrumental songs, use drums, bass and synths as the basis, but play various instuments like accordeon, vibes, harp, musicbox, sitar, theremin, typewriters etc. etc.
The music is experimental, with elements from rock, folk, electronica and they use difficult rhythms and arrangements.

They have been around since 2013, released a multitude of singles and musicvideos, also a full length album and a second album is in the making.
They keep creating new music and new instruments. Evertime I'm blown to bits by their giftedness.

What follows are some videos, to emphasize how experimental they are while at the same time catchy  (enjoy)

Their debut video:

Starmachine2000

And of course the worldfamous Marble Machine:

Here some other experimental music:

Oh, and Paradis is a 14 minute tour de force mega epic progressive masterpiece extravanganza, rivalling the best of Pink Floyd, Camel, Anekdoten, King Crimson, Gong etc.

New videos (really strange this band is not being picked up by anyone here).
It doesn't get anymore prog than this.

Sounds pretty cool.

Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe it's too much postrock? No, I don't think so, the songs are too short and melodic.

There was still no entry for this artist on progfreak, despite the Crossover team being notified more than a month ago. I have now made the basic entry: http://progfreak.com/Wintergatan-167669.html, but the Crossover team needs reminding, it seems. Several other suggestions for that sub genre over recent months have also received no response, unfortunately. Don't quite know what the situation presently is with the team, but any activity there certainly seems pretty limited to say the least. Ermm

Hi.
Thank you for your reaction.

I haven't heard/seen the website progfreak before? Is that the database for progarchives?

I seem a bit impatient sometimes, but it's mostly enthousiasm.

Crossover doesn't need reminding as the Wintergaten suggestion is one of the more recent posts in their team thread. They have a backlog and I think that several of their team members may be on hiatus for the moment (so-called real-life can get in the way, and team work can really burn people out as it can be very demanding). I do know that one of their team was having problems adding to progfreak (when I had problems ages ago Mike helped me solve the problems immediately).

What has worked well for me in the past was friendly PMs to the team members if many months have passed with no sign of any activity (can help to solidify a relationship with the people too). The team members are listed on the subgenre pages (say here -- http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=3

Progfreak is a site made and run by Mike who was an important collab at this site, but it is not part of progarchives. He made the PA team charts to help Prog Archives team members to keep track of the suggestions and their status, but not all teams use them as different teams have different methods to keep organized. It's an excellent site and worth checking out -- been too long since I used it regularly, but anyone can join and contribute. I like his tagging and rating system for albums.

So the band will be added to Progarchives? What happens next? Who will fill in the biography and add the discography?

^ There's a minimum number of positive votes required (I don't know how many in their team) to be cleared for addition. Normally it's the team who does that.

I have the album, very nice stuff indeed, and I think the guy is an utter genius for the marble machine alone.  It had not occurred to me as prog rock - more prog pop, really - but why not?  Then again, I'm one of those who'd prefer to take a fairly expansive view of what fits on the site.  Not that anyone asked me LOL

Maybe they don't have that heavy rock thing going on.
But it doesn't always have to be rock, does it? Wink

^Agreed. I bought the debut on a whim and have been pleasantly surprised by the unique and quite happy expression found therein. Bubbly percussive prog pop thang....who cares anyhoo - it sounds great.

Top banana!  I'm glad for the add.

I bought the album after watching some of the videos about designing and building the marble machine, mainly because I felt that this kind of thing had to be supported!  But it has had quite some number of spins, real fun vibe to the music.
