Inquisition's recent album was pretty fantastic, with an interesting production job. This is one of my favorite sub-genres of metal so it'd be cool to see a discussion develop on it, and there are also some proggy black metal acts out there, or black-influenced prog acts. My favorite black metal band ever is Darkthrone though.

I'm not all that much into black metal, but my dad is, being a fan of the genre in the 90's. In fact, he has once recieved a few Bathory records as a gift from Bathory's Quorthon when he sent him a few Anton Bruckner records (Bruckner being Quorthon's favorite composer).
Anyway, recently I've listened to Kvist's sole album and I was blown away by the quality of the music. It's phe-no-me-nal! Absolutely love this album.

If Absu qualifies as black metal I'm atleast I fan of one "modern" BM-band. More like blackened thrash perhaps and maybe too technical? Mostly about Mesopotamian and Egyptian demons, but its still demons. I think their two latest albums are incredible and been waiting for that album end-of-trilogy: Apsu that never seem to materialize.

Oh but do I like two Burzum-albums considerably: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss & Filosofem. Uniquely atmospheric. The whole is undoubtedly greater than the sum of its parts.

Other than that I seem to be a much bigger fan of "proto black metal" like Possessed and Sarcofago or maybe its because I just prefer death or thrash - than actual black metal. I'm guessing you didn't start this to discuss late 80's satanic/occult protodeath-obscurities such as Morbid Saint, Infernäl Mäjesty or Necrodeath either, but now I found an excuse to mention them.

but black metallers has always scored with the chicks (its the proggers that never did). The secret lies in the make-up and not the hair.

In related news the coolest guy in BM: Fenriz or Gylve Fenris Nagell of Darkthrone has recently shared a mix Welcome Into My Headset Before I Die featuring many personal favorites such as Asha Bhosle, Fairuz, Gal Costa, Roy Rodgers mm... eclectic stuff but no metal to be found though.

This is also somehow related to black metal (although I prefer afro-american).

Sorry, if I'll come back it'll be seriously on topic.

You don't think everything you wrote applies far more to hair metal than black metal? Motley Crue? Bon Jovi? Seems pretty dorky to me! LOL

bah... the Crue were pussies....  Bon Jovi? The less said the better. Though I've graduated from LOATHING them to at least liking some of their songs.. but irregardless of that....they were not hair metal man.

RATT... the kings of Hair Metal.  and no dorkery there .. only kick ass metal, good times and lots of memories of booze and chicks...  no one likes gloom and doom...  that is for losers. Metal should be kick ass and one big party. That is hair metal...

Agreed!

By the way, has anybody been listening to any new black metal albums this year? Would love to be pointed in the right direction.

The new Oranssi Pazuzu and Aluk Tolodo albums are some sweet experimental BM.

I love the more melodic and classic black metal bands, like Immortal, Satyricon, Samael, Melechesh, Dissection, and Oblomov. Myrkur's great too.

I could never get into black metal, I find the vocals appalling. The few black metal albums I enjoy are not pure black, but mixed with something else: Negura Bunget - OM is the best example, it's a mixture of genres, black being just one of them.

The only Enslaved album I enjoy is Isa, again a mixture of genres in their sound.

Sannhet is another band I enjoy, it's instrumental but there's black, some kinda sludge/doom with shoegaze/post rock - overall very interesting and original I dare say.

And two more experimental (IMO) bands - Wildernessking and Regarde Les Hommes Tomber (their s/t album is fine but it's the only one I've enjoyed so far).

Dordeduh has black metal influences, but again it's a lot more, that's why I like it.

While not exactly Home Sweet Home or Every Rose Has its Thorn most norwegian black metallers of the early days knew their 70's german dark kosmische synth-stuff well enough to carve out sublime stunners like this (and I'm not ironic):

All Odin-worshipping social nationalist-satanists get your lighters out its time for the slow one (or on second thought please don't!)!

The vocals isn't the main issue for me - its the often predictable Ramones-like simplicity of the "compositions" of the true, old school BM that makes most or the classics a fun listen for about one song or three minutes (still a whole minute longer than my patience for Ramones).

Have you tried Below the Lights, from the year before? Those are my two favorites by them. After Isa the following couple of albums were a bit of a disappointment, so I kind of stopped paying attention to them after those.

Oh come on. A power ballad isn't really a ballad either.
