Allowing only one album per artist/band is a typical approach to many lists whenever magazines makes their all-time whatever lists. In my listmaking years I used to give myself the same kind of restriction. It think I ended up with a better introduction to just how varied Progressive Rock can be. The 100th album here is by some band called Nemo dug up from as far down as 169th place. Although missing quite a few essentials it ended up as a much more eclectic list than the one we got.

47 new entries among them some crappy ones-but probably even more great ones added (imo). A prog top 100 on Rate Your Music would have three albums by Can alone, but on PA no Krautrock in sight until the 194th spot (and that's the cozy, pastoral folk of Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra). I left out Kind of Blue as a quiet (but not so quiet anymore) protest which opened up for the far more fitting pioneer-fusion masterpiece In a Silent Way.

So ehh... what do you think of this version or approach? better? worse? or maybe you just hate all lists and feel that you have to drop by just to show everyone that you are better than me?  I'm all ears.

Edit: I kept the highest charted album for all those represented with more than one.

I'd prolly change the yes and genesis choices but other than that your list would be acceptable to me.

^I didn't actually choose anything myself - I simply removed every album but the highest entry for all bands/artists with more than one title represented in PA's hot 100 (except for Miles that is).

If I were to pick favorites I would have gone for other albums by Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, VdGG, PFM mm... But that would complicate things as Jethro Tull would been completely out of the top ten - among other things.

Still no Can and little Kraut... I'd be more curious about your personal Top 100 list.
As a list of 100 recommendations for tasting prog this is probably alright despite some flaws (no Can!!) but this way of extracting stuff from the PA list isn't the most exciting thing one could do.

Yeah I too miss a good portion of Krautrock. I could do with some French and Italian acts as well
Nahh these lists always leave room for improvement to pretty much everyone here.
Then again I am not knocking lists, because I've found a whole lot of interesting stuff due to them. Rocktopus and Logan - both PA members, are responsible of vastly increasing my experimental music collection. The same goes for monsieur Scaruffi. Absolutely adore his lists on jazz and well just experimental music in general.
The OP, monsieur Saper, is guilty of hawking quite a few albums this way too...and I am very grateful of that. That is why I had the chance to experience Hosono's Cochin Moon earlier this evening. Thanks man.

I like this list, too! Kind of makes me think of two other lists: Top 100 bands and a personal top 5 (10 or 20) of recommended albums for any newbie to familiarize themselves with each subgenre.

But, seriously, a 21st Century version of a Top 100 is also warranted (even though some of you don't believe their is such a thing as 21st Century "progressive rock music").
