That was surprisingly tough, but I voted Genesis as well.
However, clutching at Straws is one of my all time favourite albums.

Its Marillion all the way for me.
for one thing Genesis never had any of the aggression that Marillion have and didn't use the guitar anywhere near as much as Marillion do. Which I understand is why Steve Hackett left
But then I've never bought the whole 'Genesis copyist' accusation that got thrown at Marillion

Fish had slightly Gabriel-esque vocals at times, but equally rather Peter Hammill-esque too, but that's where the similarity ends for me. Never bought the idea that they were Genesis copyists. Nothing like them.

That said, I think Genesis were a far superior band for my taste, as much as I liked Marillion at the time, I still listen to Genesis and have long stopped listening to Marillion.

I also don't really find such a big similarity between Marillion and Genesis... besides the fact that they are both prog... and indeed Fish's singing is very similar to Gabriel's (I guess not only his voice, but also some of the theatrical singing). I do have read that Fish actually was more influenced by Hamill, but I find the similarity in voice and aproach closer to Gabriel (and actually, it's Gabriel's and Fish's singing respectively the element I dislike most on both bands).

There are two Hammill solo albums on the cover of "Fugazi", "Fool's Mate" and "Over", but no Genesis or Gabriel album. I guess that answers the question.

Easy for me, despite I love Script, Genesis is my first love-

Just in advance

ELP vs T-Rat: I'd go with T-Rat
Starcastle vs Yes: I'd go with Yes (This is the only case of cloning).

the sound was original when Genesis created it.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

There appears to be no "Duh!" Option.

Yes, there is such an option, it reads "Peter Gabriel-era Genesis". You just choose if you read it as such, or as "Duh!".

Really should come up with a more less one-sided poll.

Easily Genesis. I do like Fish-era Marillion quite a lot, but this was really no contest.

Marillion is good.

But Genesis is one of the top and one of the first on my list! Genesis all the way, Gabriel or Collins)!

not a fair poll
it's like having Anekdoten against King Crimson. The results would be the same.

^Yes. And it would be also as fair poll as this. I don´t think there are no real reason any of these polls, they´re just for fun. Yes, I know I was myself too serious at the moment in that latest Pink Floyd album poll.

Hi,

I kinda think that this is a popularity show, and not an attempt to show both artists for the work they have done. Most of us have heard the PG/Genesis material, and I'm not sure that the same folks have heard as much, or most of the Fish/Marillion material available.

I would rather we concentrated on the works they all did ... and both had magnificent works.

To me, this is like asking who is better ... Richard Burton or Lawrence Olivier ... they were both very good and did their thing, and quite different at the same time. One's inflection was different than the other. And their work stood out as massive in the 20th century history of theater.

I do not believe that Fish set out to copy Peter at all. His solo work after had the same similar voice, and his ability stood out very well, unlike Peter who became a pop singer to my ears, and I stopped listening a long time ago.

There were other singers, and bands, that we might think that they copied this band or that band, unfortunately, all this does is take away the individuality that each of these different bands have and bring to the table. I don't find, for example, Acqua Fragile, Fruup, Ange and a few other bands to be "copies", and their personality stands out strongly on their work, and they deserve that credit, and it all makes me think that the main reason is the singing, and the fact that keyboards are the main instrument in the band, it seems like.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
