I would rate all 4 Fish albums, Brave, Marbles and Afraid of Sunlight well ahead of TOTT. I'd rate Seasons End as easily the best album either band did. |
Sorry, I guess my ears aren't attuned to the greatness you hear in vapid neo-prog. There really is nothing in the Marillion catalog to match Dance on a Volcano, Entangled, Squonk and Los Endos. They are superior compositions. |
And Hooks In You shows a side that Genesis never had - that they can rock like Bon Jovi (or actually rather better IMO). |
Yes, one of the things I always look for in music is something that rocks like Bon Jovi. As I said, vapid, but thanks for making my point for me.

Easter?? The King of Sunset Town?? The Uninvited Guest?? Holloway Girl??? There's not a bad moment on the album. And Hogarth's lyrics are relevant and have meaning - climate change, the Troubles: not just some airy fairy nonsense.
The 4 tracks you quote fro, TOTP are indeed very good, but Robbery, Assault and Battery??? A Trick of the Tail?? Dreadful.
And Hooks In You shows a side that Genesis never had - that they can rock like Bon Jovi (or actually rather better IMO).
But if you dismiss all Neo-Prog as "vapid", that's your loss. IQ, Pendragon and Marillion have made some of the very best music I've heard in ANY genre. | Damned right

Well...Trick and Wind and obviously superior. Duke is probably on par with the best of H-era marillion.
That said...the rest of late era genesis is trash so while Marillion certainly isn't consistently brilliant it's definitely better.

I'd vote any Genesis over Marillion, and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like Genesis that much save for a few albums.

I cringe whenever I see such sort of 'apples x oranges' comparisons, yeah Phil's undiisputed talent for pop music has no parallels amongst Prog musicians. I go with his music all the way through on here.

Heard a bit of Marillion. Horrible 80s music
Trick, Pidgeons and Wind is the best Genesis era. Gabriel should have been replaced after Foxtrot.

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I go for Genesis. The h era Marillion albums have their moments for sure (some of them quite big, might I say) but TOTT, WaW and ATTWT are what I prefer to listen to much more often.

It would've been more honest to propose a post-Hackett Genesis (starting with ATTWT)... or even a Post-70's Genesis (starting after Duke) to give any kind of Marillion a chance to win this bout

Another close one but Marillion never released anything as dreadful as We Can't Dance.

As above. TOTT and WAW are masterpieces obviously superior to any Marillion, but anything after Duke is inferior to H - Marillion.

Neither did they release anything as good as Duke (or the other three previous albums, FTM) Only Script rivals with W&W (and betters ATTWT and Duke, but still lags far beyond and behind TotT)

I'm honestly tempted to make some Genesis vs Marillion polls, but I predict Marillion would lose every time, simply because of the hatred people have for neo-prog (which Marillion is not anymore - LOL)

Collins-era Genesis for me. Marillion is excellent, though!

btw, how is Collins era the same as later day Genesis the same thing. Collins era started 1976. When would "later day" start for Genesis? 80s? 90s? Their last album was in 1997.

Genesis go over Marillion, whatever era there has been (except the last one without Collins).
