Can't say I care about either but I figured that this is the sort of follow-up poll that people would like to see, after the utter slaughter of Fish-era Marillion in TexasKing's poll. 

Anywho, which of these two bands/eras/lineups do you prefer?

Brave is rather good...

To me, latter-day Genesis is from either ATTWT or Abcab onwards (nit from TOTT).... Then Marillion would win.

Ascribing the eras to individuals is just plain wrong.  Banks and Rutherford were equally complicit in Genesis's shift towards pop (and many of their peers were equally guilty in the late 70s/early 80s).  Hogarth was recruited by the then members of Marillion so again, is that era really to do with just the lead singer?  My personal opinion is that Marillion ceased to be of interest following the departure of Fish whereas I started to disengage with Genesis from Duke onwards...

Can anyone honestly say that albums such as Genesis and Invisible Touch hold a candle to the great masterpieces that Brave and Afraid of Sunlight are?

^Well sure they can...but I would rather vote for Genesis on account of Trick, W & W, attwt, Duke, Abacab and yes the Shapes album - all of which beat anything Marillion has released with H on vocals...imo that is

Argubaly yes that would be latter day Genesis, although I probably wrongly took it to mean Collins vocal era Genesis, from ATOTT. Even so, ATTWT and Duke trump aything I've ever heard from Marillion with Hogarth. I have the film of Brave and it just depresses and bores me tbh.

Difficult for me to pick - probs both on-par for me. They both never had an end-to-end 'perfect' album (at least from 1991-......) but I have time for both, in small doses. The live offering Volume Two - The Longs, is up there with Seconds Out. For me anyway.........

Hogarth era Marillion. Later Collins Genesis was not great. The first 3 or 4 Collins era albums are great, but Hogarth era Marillion has released many more great albums imo.

Hogarth era Marillion by a mile.

I really like Trick of the Tail, but it pales into insignificance when confronted with the sheer magnificence of Seasons End. Wind and Wuthering was good, but after that, Genesis were pretty poor. Marillion produced Brave and Marbles, which are up there with their first 4 albums.

Yes Marillion did in 1995   Afraid of Sunlight    it is one of the most perfect albums in the history of recorded music

Sorry, I guess my ears aren't attuned to the greatness you hear in vapid neo-prog. There really is nothing in the Marillion catalog to match Dance on a Volcano, Entangled, Squonk and Los Endos. They are superior compositions.

TOTT and Wuthering are probably my faves if you compare both bands, but for the overall catalog Marillion with Hogarth definitely have the edge over Genesis, and they are still creating and performing with vigor.

Easter?? The King of Sunset Town?? The Uninvited Guest?? Holloway Girl??? There's not a bad moment on the album. And Hogarth's lyrics are relevant and have meaning - climate change, the Troubles: not just some airy fairy nonsense.

The 4 tracks you quote fro, TOTP are indeed very good, but Robbery, Assault and Battery??? A Trick of the Tail?? Dreadful.

And Hooks In You shows a side that Genesis never had - that they can rock like Bon Jovi (or actually rather better IMO).

But if you dismiss all Neo-Prog as "vapid", that's your loss. IQ, Pendragon and Marillion have made some of the very best music I've heard in ANY genre.

Vote Marillion by accident. Both eras started well. Somehow my interest in Marillion faded after Brave (though Brave is one of my favourite Marillion albums). AtotT and W&W are excellent, Holidays in Eden is one of my guilty pleasures and Brave is as good as any Fish-era Marillion album.
