I recently picked up three 2017 albums that are really kicking my arse:

Mumpbeak - Tooth. Keyboard power trio playing heavy avant jazz prog. Roy Powell mainly on snarling distorted Clavinet (played through guitar effects pedals), Lorenzo Feliciato on electric bass, Torstein Lofthus going nuts on the drumkit.

Reflections In Cosmo - s/t. Kjetil Moster (saxes), Snah (guitars), Stale Storlokken (keys), Thomas Stronen (drums) - so, a proper supergroup, then. Like you would expect with these names this is a Crab Nebula of freeform interstellar heaviosity.

Bobby Previte - Mass. Gregorian plainsong goes head to head with vicious sawtooth guitar riffs (courtesy of Stephen O'Malley, Jamie Saft and others) whilst the cathedral organ wails and Previte’s bombastic tribal drums kick everything into overdrive.

All on RareNoise who seem to be having a vintage year.

Glad to be of service mate. Looks like you're already paying me back as I am wildly interested in all three of those - in particular the one with Torstein Lofthus. Man I am a sucker for his playing!

Also in the jazzy realm though served up with what sounds like the bass antics of Magma and a little bit of funk and Kamasi Washington:

As usual, at  the end of the year it is hard to keep track of everything that has been released, and looking at people's lists you realize that you have missed a lot of great stuff. In my view, this year started out really slowly in terms of new interesting releases, then it slowly but steadily gained momentum. One of my Top 5 favourite albums = Charlie Cawood's exquisite The Divine Abstract - was released in late October. You can listen to it on the Bad Elephant Music Bandcamp page. Charlie plays bass with Knifeworld (among others), and is an extremely talented individual. If you haven't heard the album, give it a listen - or two, or more. Sheer beauty!

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are having a great year, four releases so far of which I've heard 3 and all are pretty good. "Murder of the Universe" in particular stands out to me and has a lot of prog leanings (3 long suites of songs each with a thematic concept / story it tells).

Hi Gaz!
We have a few Gizzard fans on PA, including myself, and you're absolutely right; they've had a terrific year. I prefer Sketches myself. I think it is a fresh breath of air in their discography.

I've listened to the Earth's Answer and Fearful Symmetry, solid melodic material, kinda reminiscent of Gryphon but with a more folk edge.

Yeah, I'd heard Polygondwanaland a couple times already, I listened to Sketches while working today but it didn't grab me as instantly as Murder, will have to give it another spin later when I have more attention.

Listening to Major Parkinson now, should be no surprise I love it even though I kind of long for their sound back in the days of the Solitary Home - but I feel like pining for that album is a little ironic. Their music definitely has more depth now, just less humour to it, I miss that about their older stuff.

I know nothing about Vespero but I've queued up that album for next based on the album art alone. Gotta love these streaming services that let you try things out very easily.

adding King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard "Polygondwanaland" and Lunatic Soul "Fractured" to my top-of-2017 list. With "Fractured" I feel Lunatic Soul topped Riverside in my Polish Prog book <3

Listening to it again now, lovely stuff, met him at the weekend at an NSRO gig, lovely guy.

Vezhlivy Otkaz - Military Verses is going to jump straight into my top 5 on the year, darker and edgier than Geese and Swans, it kills.
