Both bands are glorious geniuses in their own right, but which is better? GG gets my vote, but barely.
Per un Amico is my favorite foreign album ever, but Octopus and Power and the Glory are that much better.

I voted for Gentle Giant. To be honest, I'm not too impressed with either band, but I really admire Gentle Giant's compositional prowess much more than PFM's.

Both favourite bands of mine when I joined this site, and neither do I return to much. Gentle Giant has many more albums I really like than PFM, but I'll compare the first three albums of each as those are my favourites by both bands (I don't include Quelli).

- Gentle Giant vs. Storia di un Minuto: I'd give the edge to Storia (my favourite PFM album).
- Acquiring the Taste vs. Per un Amico: Acquiring the Taste definitely takes it.
- Three Friends vs. L'Isola di Niente: I adore "Via Lumiere" but Three Friends takes it.

Gentle Giant it is, but PFM is extremely talented.

If PFM had done a lot more more jazzy music like "Via Lumiere" and "Dove... Quando... (Parte II)" then I'd like them more.

Both stellar groups, but I have to go with PFM. I'd say that Gentle Giant actually gets the edge a little as far as putting out consistent albums, but PFM's highs are some of the highest that there are. Appena Un Po has to be one of the top 20 songs of all time; so beautiful.

RPI is generally a genre which does not do much for me, but I do like a lot of PFM.

Twenty years ago I loathed Gentle Giant: I just didn't get them at all. Then they just clicked and I now love them. So GG for me.

LÍsola/The world is high quality PFM.
Amico and Chocolate are reasonably good but not classic imo
Giant are one of the best. Better than Genesis, Yes and Crimson

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Both are equal to me. Quite different, but excellent.

Really? I thought the melodic beauty of bands such as Le Orme and the admittedly lesser known acts like Celeste, De De Lind, Campo Di Marte mm... would be perfect.

- Back on topic: although Storia di un Minuto is as wonderful as progrock gets I guess my own vote goes to GG for a much larger quantity of top quality work.

Easily GG. What I've heard from PFM has been very up and down.

Not a really big fan of either of these bands but GG has some material that blows me away in the right moment. Other than that, I can appreciate both bands intellectually but emotionally they're just not the right fit for me.

I have to admit it's really close for me and I almost went with "both are equal." However, I ultimately chose Gentle Giant. They are one of the most unique and interesting bands of all time. Not many bands could pull off some of the things that they did.

Hmmm....I went with equal. I don't play either band all that much but to my ears PFM is certainly more melodic and accessible. GG is one of those bands where I think the playing and concepts are good and interesting but the music is often not that likeable.

Gentle Giant is my favorite band, so it should be no surprise.

PFM is right up there, though!
