Topic: Moody Blues - The Magnificent 7 albums Posted: February 01 2017 at 06:57 |
When the Moody Blues hit the scene, they started out as a R&B band, but as soon as John Lodge and Justin Hayward joined, and they got the opportunity to record with an orchestra, the band's music changed into symphonic rock. Maybe one of the first truly symphonic rockbands, they recorded the conceptalbum Days of Future Passed in 1967, with an orchestra.
The continued with the same style; producing 7 albums, some of wich were true concept-albums, with the bandmember all providing vocals and playing all kinds of instruments themselves.
The had 4!!!! leadvocalists and 5 songwriters in the band, wich is truly remarkable. After 1972 they broke up for a few years, and after the reunion of 1978 things were different, so let's just focus on the seven albums that they put out in 1967-1972. I voted for my personal favorite, Seventh Sojourn.

To me, these 7 albums are essential, since this period was the climax of the Moody Blues, so it's hard to choose one over the other. I'll vote for A Question of Balance, since it was the first one I heard, and I would listen to it all the time for a while, and it brings me a lot of fond memories every time I give it a spin.

I was tempted to vote for "on the threshold of a dream" especially since nobody else voted for it but ultimately went for "to our children's children's children." Interestingly the only track I don't care for that much on that album is the one that was released as a single and that is "watching and waiting."

It's a tough one, but I went with "Seventh Sojourn", a brooding yet oddly uplifting album that rose out of intense despondency that the band was feeling at the time. Also because it needed a bit more love. I could have picked any except for "Days" (very good) and "On the Threshold" (not a personal favorite at all) and given good reasons

TOCCC. One of my fave albums of all time.
Seventh Sojourn comes in close second for me.

Seventh Sojourn by far... What a beautiful beautiful album.
Next would be To Our Children's Children's Children, then On the Threshold of a Dream.

I go for "In Search of the Lost Chord". Was one of the first prog albums I bought when I was a teenager and is still my favourite MB album after all those years.

Wow, I think "threshold" is a great album. It might be my second favorite after "children."

The first 2 are the only ones that I can get past the first track. I have to go with In Search of the Lost Chord. Was a favorite late teens- early 20's space out album.
