Hi, I'm playing in a metal band with prog influences. We're called Dreamslain, and here are the tracks of our first ep "Tales of War":
https://dreamslain.bandcamp.com/

Dreamslain is a heavy metal trio located in Tromsų, Norway. It consists of members from Norway, Switzerland and Russia. In addition to heavy metal, Dreamslain draws inspiration from Scandinavian extreme metal, classical music and prog rock. While there are blastbeats and growling vocals, the music is mainly focused on melodies, with all 3 members playing improvised solos.

I'm not so sure. The pieces are definitely long enough, but very metal - just metal. I like the electronic use of synths though - it definitely adds to the music.

Good job! Looking forward to hearing more! Wink

thank you for the interest. you can follow our facebook page to be notified when we record more music
you might be right that we're simply to heavy to be considered prog, at least in the modern soundscape

I don't know if it's that you're too heavy, only that I just don't hear too much prog. Opeth is heavy, but is still classified under prog metal.

Anyways, it doesn't matter. Looking forward to hearing more and I'll check your facebook page once in a while.

If it isn't, its well on its way. Prog elements are definitely there.

On a side note: I have an absolute "municipal crush" on TromsŲ and have wanted to visit for years. I have in-laws in Namsos, so maybe I will get there before I'm worm food.

Thank you. Yes, I don't think we're full on prog yet. You're definitely right we're on our way. The songs we've composed for our next cd will probably have more prog elements. Surprisingly enough, it looks to be heavier as well, containing more black/death elements

Tromsų is a quite nice place to visit. We have a lot of whales in november, and northern lights. Late summer is also nice

The gap between metal and prog-metal is not too wide, usually. I second who says that there's more metal than prog, but with some little changes in the arrangements, adding more clean vocals in example, it could be tunred into prog-metal in the Ayreon vein. Of course if this is what you want, otherwise proceed on your way.

being compared with Ayreon is a big honour in itself. I think we aim for a somewhat heavier sound though.

It's mainly for your use of synths. And my personal suggestion of adding clear vocals is in that direction. Ok for heavier sounds, but my personal view of "progressiveness" implies not following a standard. So be as hard as you like, but don't trap yourself into a canon.

Hi, I am adding your band on Metal Music Archives. Do you have any material besides your current EP?

Never mind my original question. I have found a demo and a single by your band. However, if you have a Twitter or a website besides Facebook for me to add in your biography, that would be highly appreciated and highly beneficial for you.

You're quite welcome!

You can join MMA, and soon you'll be able to see your name there... I bet you can ask us metalheads questions as well!
