Being just about 2PM PDT, Barack Obama is going to address the nation in a town hall today.  Interested to hear what he has to say.  Will be broadcast on PBS for those here in the US.https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/watch-live-former-president-obama-holds-virtual-town-hall-on-policing-and-civil-unrest

If trump had barely lost to hillary, his voice and influence as a dissenter would have been huge. Since he won the election and failed as president, his voice will be diminished.

Referring back to my previous post, in some ways it was better that he won so that people could see what he was really made of. Could you imagine how his following would have grown if hillary had barely beat him.

The Bible photo-op shows that cynical trump thinks that Christians are that stupid, and maybe some of them are, but a lot of them are not.

Wow. Jim Mattis, retired Major General of the U.S. Marine Corp and former Secretary of Defense in Trump's administration has drawn a broadside on the leaky and sinking USS Trump.

“I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled,” Mattis writes. “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.” He goes on, “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

all too well thanks to a few interesting articles over the years which play that scenario out..  instead of likely being on the doorstep of a decade or more of Democratic domination in DC of the WH and both halls of Congress we'd be looking at HRC being 1 termed (having accomplished zero against GOP obstruction) with a solid red House and close to a 60 seat majority in the Senate going into 2020 and likely to grow after the election.

now that scenario.. is truly scary...

to say nothing of state and local offices which the Republicans long understood.. and Democrats only finally realized AFTER Obama left office just how crucial those are. Redistricting is coming.. and just as Democrats are set to more than make up their losses in state and local offices over the last decade through previous neglect.

Plus the complete dysfunction and inability to lead or govern would have years later in their general public acknowledgement. So yeah..  all things being equal and with the courts always being in flux anyway.. probably was best in a tragic kind of way that HRC lost. LOL  Not to mention the shear spectacle of bread and circus's Trump has delivered seemingly on a daily basis ...and having anyone who does't sufficiently stroke Trump's ego fed to the lions..  pure entertainment man..

either you laugh .. or you cry over the last 4 years.. and it helps to realize that it could have actually been worse if Trump had NOT won.

^ Yes indeed Micky, thats exactly what i am saying. He had to win first so that he could totally fail in front of everyone.
Shouting discouragement from the sidelines is more his style and his popularity would have grown, but forced to lead ruined him and it is going to rip the repubs in half. the damage will be significant.

I'm looking forward to seeing which repubs start to jump ship first.

Getting back to the anti-authority crowd that trump has been courting, those guys are very mindful of police over step and watching a policeman execute a citizen probably did not go over well with them at all, even the ones that are racist probably did not care for seeing that happen.

I really hope he still has the respect of his former colleagues. He stayed quiet, as he said he would, until the time was right. Maybe this will foment or at least maintain the momentum of dissent among the ranks that will cause the orange usurper to go lame duck.

Whatever the case, its nice to have a few people speaking like actual leaders.

Hasn't Mark Esper made a categorical statement that invoking insurrection is only a last resort, which the current situation is not according to him?

I assume that when Trump was inspecting that White House bunker, he used the opportunity to provide science with a stool sample from his undies to show what a man of steel is made of.

Science replied by saying a small sample would have been sufficient, not a bloody barrel full, thank you very much.

The photo op was not aimed at Christians per se, but at the Evangelical Right, which not only supplies Rump with votes but also big campaign dollars. And the funny thing is that he didn't need to do it. As long as he keeps packing the courts with conservative judges, which is all that they really care about, he's got them in his pocket.

Trump threatening to use military is a warning sign regarding his possible reaction should he not be re-elected. I said it before and will repeat it here that I consider Trump to be totally capable of a coup d'état should the presidential election not have the result he wants

And Evangelicals interviewed after the photo op did say they approve.  They don't mind how bad he gets as long as he is 'their guy', that simple.

@Baldjean: I totally agree. His use of the military in DC might have been to test how far he could get the forces to act unlawfully. That seems to have worked, especially with Mark Esper doing 2 spectacular 180-s in the space of just a few hours.

I cannot imagine what other reason there could have been for that otherwise pointless Bible photo-op.

Like General Mattis' stinging rebuke of Trump the day before, another retired 4 star USMC General spoke up yesterday, John Allen, saying:

"Donald Trump isn't religious, has no need of religion, and doesn't care about the devout, except insofar as they serve his political needs. The President failed to project any of the higher emotions or leadership desperately needed in every quarter of this nation during this dire moment."

He then added,

So mark your calendars—this could be the beginning of the change of American democracy not to illiberalism, but to enlightenment....But it will have to come from the bottom up. For at the White House, there is no one home."

Absolutely. They believe he was sent from heaven! Can you believe that?

The Mango Messiah will lead the fettered blacks out of bondage. They shall ford the River Jordan and come unto the land of milk and honey. At least, that's what Trump inferred in a Tweet:

"I’ve done more for Black Americans, in fact, than any President in U.S. history, with...the possible exception of another Republican President, the late, great, Abraham Lincoln...and it’s not even close. The Democrats know this, and so does the Fake News, but they refuse to write or say it because they are inherently corrupt!"

"With the possible exception"? Trump is not even sure Lincoln is on his level.

I wonder what Trump was thinkin’
When he compared himself to Lincoln:
Can’t read, can’t speak, can’t tell the truth --

Not a bit like Honest Abe, forsooth
(So the f*ck
er was obviously drinkin’).
