I´m very interested in when/what was the genesis of Prog-Metal as there really doesn´t seem to be a consensus at all on this subject. Some people argue as back as early 70`s while others push it to late 80`s.
Wich was the first Prog-Metal song for you? Wich was the first prog metal band?

What's interesting is that metal itself was considered a form of progressive rock, Sabbath included, and so by its nature heavy metal was prog metal; Sabbath, Priest, Queen, Scorps, UFO, Maiden, Ozzy, Angel Witch, MSG, Rising Force, Voivod; each a form of metal (or in some cases heavy rock), all progressive by nature.   Additionally there were smaller acts that quietly contributed and only occasionally got their due such as A.F.T., Uli Roth's Electric Sun.

For me it was early Black Sabbath and the first four Alice Cooper albums had a lot of proggy tracks.

Uh,  more like let's not forget Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Rush. King Crimson too. Yeah Budgie also. 

Modern prog metal started in the mid eighties with Fates Warning, Queensryche and Watchtower(especially these guys although hey are more obscure). However, as was said the seeds for prog metal go way back. I think you can trace it back toa  band called High Tide who were early prog and early metal at the same time. Then LZ, DP, Black Sabbath, Atomic Rooster, Lucifer's Friend and all the other usual suspects. Some bands were heavy on the metal and not so heavy on the prog but as far as prog metal goes I think Uriah Heep and Rush were prototypes of the genre with some stuff by Black Sabbath and King Crimson being important as well.

That's cheating    All you mention (in your edit) minus your 80's selection. But it's all quite obvious. I still am not familiar with Watchtower (I should be) but can see the developments within the rest.
I also would like to give an honourable mention to the incredible power-trio MAY BLITZ. These guys have flown under the radar for far too long. About time they are out in the open, so to speak. Way ahead of their time.

If you go to the metal music archives site you will find a plethora of these proto metal/ proto prog metal bands. They have them listed as proto metal but a lot of them have prog elements too as you can imagine.

The term 'progressive metal' was being used in California as early as 1980 in reference to bands as Iron Maiden ~ several years before acts as Watchtower existed, and in wide use by 1984 (many years after High Tide or Led Zeppelin who had almost nothing to do with progressive metal) .

That's all well and good but we all know that terms can and do change with time. Heavy metal itself was used in a much broader way then it eventually was to be used. Also, even "progressive rock" was used in a slightly different way even before ITCOTCK was released. So it doesn't surprise me that even progressive metal could be used in a different way then it was eventually used. Iron Maiden and even Metallica did have some progressive elements but they weren't really part of the scene that came to be known as prog metal. 

As for LZ or HT having barely anything to do with prog metal well ok but then neither did any band back then especially since the genre was in a proto stage at best.

The Metal Archives is an amazing site - however, I couldn't find The Dillinger Escape Plan listed. Never mind. They included Budgie

^Going to have t disagree with you on this one. Any criteria that makes In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida a prog-metal progenitor also existed in Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Bros (album version)the year earlier.
