Didn't a lot of early prog bands utilize excess heaviness? Prog has been using hard rock for awhile, it only branched off and got a little heavier. When that time was I'm not sure, but I'm guessing bands like Atomic Rooster, Captain Beyond, Blue Oyster Cult, Sabbath, and others were the ones that started it all, no?

In my opinion no. The true prog metal scene didn't start until the eighties. Those bands as well as a few others that have already been mentioned sewed the seeds if you will but it would be several years for prog metal to really coalesce as the genre we know today.

One or two people on here seemed to have downplayed Rush's influence which is really a shame because their influence can not be stated enough. I think Rush have had by far the single most important influence on prog metal than any other band. If it wasn't for Rush no Dream Theater and probably no Queensryche either. Whether albums such as 2112 or Hemispheres are true prog metal is debatable. Their influence however is not.

Yes, I agree self-aware progressive metal didn't begin until the 80's. But the bands I mentioned birthed the idea, which relates to the topic.

As for Rush, I think no matter if a few people disregard them, Rush's influence is more massive than practically any other 70's band, and have been stated as influencial by countless metal bands. This goes for both prog and non-prog metal.

And the OP continues to ignore his own thread.  Ah well.

So yes most of it was gone before Black Sabbath appeared. But Birmingham had 'Mothers' club which was possibly the most progressive/ underground of the music clubs outside of London despite being 'industrial'. I didnt call it 'Hippie sh*t, i was quoting a previous posting.. sorry if my irony doesnt come over as clearly as your own or other postersErmm and i'm quite a fan of Sabbath and i see their lyrical content as generally positive and yes i feel that lyrics like Warpigs are still very relevant today. Sabbath werent the only band to succumb to cocaine and freaking themselves out with occult imagery..
I dig what you're saying daddy-o, but the Sabbs were not comfortable with the "Mothers club" scene, by their own omission, and yes, the record industry did indeed jump on the psychedelic band wagon. Remember "Watch the Flowers Grow" by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons? I do, unfortunately. LOL

Aren't there sometimes new members who just come on, post a few things and then leave? He might be one of those. Some people just get disinterested.

I bought their sole release, Darkness Before Dawn, last year after stumbling across the band here on PA. Some of the songs are not my cup of tea, but I found the album worthwhile for the two epics, Day of Wrath and The Last Battle.

I'm confused about the terminology.  Fill in the blanks:

a) To be "metal," the work needs to have:

  1. Distorted guitar
  2. Screaming male vocals
  3. ?

b) To be "progressive," the work needs to have:

  1. Odd time signatures
  2. Mellotron

I wil attempt to help you out here.

a), 3. Must wear leather & crosses while work is performed live.

b) 3. Must wear robes & capes while work is performed live  Therefore :

Prog metal = Loud complicated rock music that sounds classical with musicians dressed up for Halloween..
