Yeah, I think "prog" is a bit of a loaded term that can be... Taken for granted. In essence, music is always progressing in some form or another in whatever form it takes. I think the use of the term points more to a matter of intent. However, rarely are these terms ever prescribed by the artist. They are usually the result of some kind of PR hype... Not as familiar with that in terms of this genre specifically, but I suspect that to be the case, nonetheless. I doubt Rush said, "Hey, let's be a progressive rock band," when they wrote working man. I'm pretty sure all Tony Iommi was thinking was, "let's make the heaviest music we can imagine." Hence the modern metal obsession with being the "most brutal".

Some good points there. I think that some blame has to go to the fans themselves. Musicians don't usually categorize themselves. I would like to hear what Buzz Osbourne has to say about his band The Melvins. This site also takes the genre thing off the deep end. I mean Bjork is here. Who the freak is going to go to a progrock site looking for the lowdown on Bjork? Please. Next thing we know hip hop bands will start showing up here. Progressive rock was a generic term that was applied in the early seventies to a form of music for one reason or another lost popularity in the mid seventies sometime. Some bands changed their tune. Some soldiered on and some threw in the towel.

King Crimson, Atomic Rooster, ELP, etc were progressive and heavy without the need for labels like 'prog', 'metal' and 'prog-metal'. Often bands with these labels are neither.
