If one of the bands mentioned should ever be included I'll suggest the Nina Hagen Band for Eclectic and ABBA for RIO/Avant.

You know, a lot of people refer to Boston as a hard prog band, but I mean I just can't see it. All I've really experienced progressive from them is 'Foreplay / Long Time' I think, and even that isn't cut-and-dry.

As for what I think should be in prog-related? Allman Brothers, no question.

As for the poll, I don't know any of them well enough to have a sufficiently informed opinion. In terms of the others listed in the initial post, I have seen Cream as a proto-prog band, but I seem to be very much in the minority. There are a great many bands/ artists not in PA that have some progressive rock relation (P-Funk for instance, and I expect Abba was mentioned as a joke before, but the song "Eagle" sounds proggy to me -- doesn't mean that I think that Abba should be included).

One artist that I've been keen on being included is William Sheller for Lux Aeterna (his debut album) in particular, which is a sort of Symphonic Prog/ Psych album meets "classical choral music". He has some other material that would fit the site, but not another whole album's worth that I am aware of. The problem is that he has released over twenty albums since his imo Prog debut in 1972. Due to complete discography issues, unless we had a Various Artists category for Prog albums by such mostly non-Prog artists, I wouldn't expect William Sheller to be included in PA.

Thanks! Many are in fact taking this poll as a joke, but I'm afraid I'm very serious, and so are you!

Maybe my definition of prog is a bit too wide, or I'm just too young. However, I've heard about everything from these bands and I'm very familiar with the prog scene. Progressiveness, in my opinion, does not come from small elements and individual songs, but usually the whole album.

Guns N Roses, for example have an album called Use Your Illusion II. It's my favorite album by them, and while no individual song is prog (except maybe Estranged), the album itself creates a very unique atmosphere. It builds up on you, and the songs, although they don't transition into each other, create a bigger picture.

However, that's definitely not the best of it. Actually, that's one of the least relevant bands on my list. 

Way more relevant is Massive Attack. Though dubbed trip hop, their albums Mezzanine and Blue Lines create an experience very similar to Radiohead. Their songs, unlike in Use Your Illusion II, flow into each other. The atmosphere is just brilliant, and it does build up on me - immensely.

I'll include one more example. Dire Straits is one of the most rewarding hard rock bands in my opinion. And I actually think of them, not by album but by hit song. 

Money for Nothing (happens to be a collaboration with Sting) is a long piece that for whatever reason reminds me of Porcupine Tree's singular song called Anesthetize. I think that if you listen to Money for Nothing you'll know what I'm talking about - yet it isn't something that you can put into words.

The Sultans of Swing is a way shorter piece that has a sort of jazzy swing to it, hence the name. Nothing progressive about it though. Or so I thought... until about my hundredth listen! Wow it builds up on you!

Isn't that really what it means to be progressive?

Milton Nascimento, Marcos Valle, Pescado Rabioso, Arthur Verocai, Jorge Ben, Lula Cortez & Ze Ramalho's Paebiru, Nelson Angelo E Joyce, The Seatbelts, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Shiina Ringo & Soda Stereo ;) They aren't completely prog, they've had their moments.. But the active members of this site deserve to discover the treasure-trove that Brazil is, but is sadly very underrepresented in Progarchives.

I think Milton Nascimento sure as hell belongs on Progarchives though, each album had symphonic qualities, jazz elements, almost RIO in nature with Milgres Dos Peixes and Minas. 

From your list, Depeche Mode is a quite unique band but probably shouldn't be on here for.. really any reason. Good music though!
