Hi,
While not considered "progressive", the best for me is STEVE GADD ... one listen to some of the early albums by Rickie Lee Jones, and then more recently the work with Kate Bush ... and the word "progressive" takes on a completely different meaning from simply "beating" a beat and time.

Previously I've mentioned Charlie Benante - usually a 'forgotten' drummer from Anthrax (well, I've never heard anyone speak of him......) Just sayin' - whilst on an Anthrax hijacking - my sis took the time to watch a 'bass clinic' demo from bassist Frank Bello. She has practically fallen in love with him !! Y'know, these guys (Anthrax) are truly amazing folks. Please take some time to check out some of Charlie's drum work. Thrash isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there's lots of gifted musicians in the field. Gosh, Anthrax and Maiden for me !!!!
The thread is four pages old and no mention of the amazing Clive Brooks of Egg? I'm surprised, but then again my perception is distorted, being an Egg fanboy. Nonetheless, his drumming on the three Egg albums is spectacular. He was a heavy hitter, definitely, I read somewhere that they often did not even mic him up at the concerts. He could be very gentle with his kit, though, too. Just as an example, he makes the 17/8 section on "Wring Out the Ground" seem so smooth. He is, in my opinion, one of the very best "super-forgotten" drummers. To name another one not-yet-named, Giancarlo Golzi of Museo Rosenbach is a really good one, too. Very dynamic and all-over-the-place, but in a good way.

well said.. but completely out of place in a thread to 'super-forgotten' drummers You don't even have to be a drummer to know and appreciate the music and man and his talent... you merely have to know music.
He
suffers from the 'studio pro' malady that would keep him from the Mount
Rushmore of drummers but no doubt most would put him in the top 5
drummers who ever took up the skins man.

anyhow... since the thread predictably veered away from great 'forgotten' drummers to everyone's favorite prog drummer... I'll offer the thread win.
definitely great.. definitely forgotten.. the counterpart to the undisputed greatest of all bass players. Making the greatest rhythem section known to man...

^ Oh, I was amidst posting a reply about Preston when my pod conked out. So, Preston Heyman played on the pretty cool Atomic Rooster 'comeback' album from 1980. He also was on some other odd things in the late-70's - maybe Alan Parsons Project and the Brand X related Wilding/Bonus album 'Pleasure Signals'
