As the message on the Captcha page implies, I suspect whether your post is intercepted by the Captcha software is dependant on the anti-malware software you are running on your PC.

If you have anti-malware protection that Google approves of then you'l never get a Captcha. Simples.

Anti-virus software has become an intrusive part of PC usage that in the main is more irritating than a virus because it's there all the time while I've experienced one viral attack in twenty-three years of being on-line. To date every threat my anti-virus software has ever reported has proven to be benign and harmless.

I'm cannot change my anti-virus software because it is installed and controlled on my PC by my employer's IT department via Group Policy. So at present I will begrudgingly tolerate the use of Captchas on this forum until they become so intrusive that I really cannot be arsed to visit the site any more.  Getting Captchas when posting in reserved/private sections of the forum? That's intrusive and unnecessary. Getting a Captcha for editing my own post? Yup, that's also intrusive and unnecessary. Getting a Captcha for quoting someone else's post? Again, intrusive and probably unnecessary.

However, Captchas aren't a problem when they work. When one goes through and my post appears in the thread I'm bloody elated. But, as we've all experienced, it's when the post fails (regardless of whether we've answered the Captcha correctly or not) and the carefully written post vanishes - that's more than irritating, that's fu*king annoying.

So... are Captchas necessary on this site? Probably not. The problem of spammers is not alleviated by Captchas because most of them are not robots, they may be sweatshop slaves but they're not robots. Sure, the PA once got hit by a robot hack but it didn't get here by posting a message on the forum - it was an SQL injection attack that wiped out the database. A few of us who were online at the time acted quickly and rebuilt the entire site from Goolge's cached pages (little thanks we got for that btw).

What?

As if their own botnet wasn't enough they insist on you running a particular anti-virus software as well? Apparently my Common Sense 2017 isn't on the list of approved options. Disapprove

I truly share your anger, Hugues.

The thing has been discussed (or mostly just joked about) since last Monday or so, for several pages, on a thread titled "I'm not a sodding robot, all right".

Frankly, could we just get rid of it, PLEASE! As soon as possible. One can already see how it has caused a decrease of new reviews. And I can assure that on my behalf.
(Actually I lost a possibility to send one review, because at first I didn't go through it, and the later try to send the same review failed.)

Spambots. That's the reason Captcha exists, it has nothing to do with security at all.

Can't quite get that if you are already logged in the forum you need to go through captcha validation.... surely that should be easy to fix??

What happens to me invariably is that I have to post the same thing twice, 'cos Captch don't captcha what I be posting.

This software is ridiculous.  I cannot use emoticons, quote, or write anything more than a line without having to prove I am not a robot.  And when I prove I am not, the software does not accept it.  Get rid of this stupid thing!

I pretty much copy to clipboard any post more than 2 lines long before posting. I forget at the worst times.

I don't know why but I never get these captchas. I only got it once when i logged in on a public computer and I had to identify street signs.

I'm sure it would be... as much as a love to hammer M@X.. I'll give him enough sense to fix it if was easy.  On a hunch I'd say he simply doesn't know how... for years we have had 'admin' types that never posted.. never moderated but were purely computer geeks.  Perhaps the site doesn't 'employ' them anymore and M@X's only talent is cashing the check that comes with owning the site.

That's what I try to do, but I do forget once in a while, usually after writing a longer post... and of course, I'm so discouraged that I don't bother rewriting it a second time (this happened while answering Dean on the level of live and the GD threads)

Generally, when it doesn't post, it tells me that I have a denied access to post in this forum....

But that's a bug that I've been having for at least five years now.

I don't need to bother saving before trying to post when using Chrome since I can just hit the back button to get back to the post reply page, which still has everything I typed, and try again.

I've only been hit twice with Captcha, so it hasn't been any real hassle to me.
Just a fanboy passin' through.

I use chrome - the back button doesn't recover lost data for me.
What?
