External tap tempo

I've never used an external tap tempo before. I don't think I have an external clicker device for it. I'm only interested in buying one if it can do what I want. I want to split the signal with a Y connector jack and control the tempo of two separate delays simultaneously. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?
