I think there was more goblins and wizards in 1980s 'heavy metal' than there ever were in 1970s 'prog'.

I thought 80s metal and power metal was about pixies and goblins??? I'm confused
Classical music isn't dead, it's more alive than it's ever been. It's just not on MTV.

Exactly what I think whenever I hear about prog dealing with such matters. It really isn't an important topic on prog's lyrics. Some that come to mind are Rick Wakeman's "Myths and Legends of King Arthur", some few songs from early King Crimson (The Court of the Crimson King, Lizard, Formentera Lady), and perhaps a bit more songs from Genesis. Oh yeah, Renaissance with Scheherazade. I think there's more of this topics on hard rock, though. If you want to have all the fantasy you can get, then you should check out the matal band "Rhapsody of Fire"... that one is exclusively fantasy lyrics (I think some might call them prog metal, but though they may have some elements of such, I wouldn't really call them so).

I wish it were.

Genesis, Jade Warrior and Hawkwind have some fantasy elements. Not as much one might think. The fantasy elements when present are seldom the conventional goblins, pixies and wizards that are often mentioned.

He was the wizard of a thousand kings-ings-ings
And I chanced to meet him one night wandering-ing-ing
He told me tales, and he drank my wine-ine-ine-ine
Me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine-ine-ine-ine
What?

Ragnarok from 1976 has a very fairy-tale feel. No goblins or pixies..

One of my friends from long ago said the same thing: "Progressive music is all about fantasy and pixies." Then he later heard OaeoZ in my truck and was impressed with that.. With how "sinister it sounds." I think it's easier to categorize something if you don't know what it is.

It does bother me, the general opinion of Prog. But it's a strange misconception to think that it's about 'pixies' and 'lollypops'

I think it's Heep with the Wizards, Rainbow and Dio with Dragons and elves.

Prog rock is about people lyrically. Sometimes how stupid people are, Tull and FZ, sometimes how spiritual, Yes, sometimes surreal death (Genesis, Tull). However bizarre, adventurous, devious, obscure and more Prog rock, lyrically reflects the human condition with more complexity and depth. It does not idealize people like the teen fantasy stuff you get elsewhere - which is just a sales pitch for identity reinforcing. This incidentally may be most swiftly understood and encapsulated by The Beatles songs (from pop in the firt half, to what we call proto prog in the second.

In short the person who thinks pixies etc is way off base - seriously wrong.

Or the best song summing this up in a parody ... Goblin Girl - FZ.

I think all themes :  fantasy, lyricism, spiritual, existential problems ...
have a place in music   and others artistic forms ! Due the inquisitive nature of human being . Certainly in Progressive Rock ( in all sub-genres) and Classical music this discussion are more deep, because are more meditative / contemplative and less commercial !

I'm already out when it says "songs about" - I'm interested in how it sounds and what it's "about" doesn't normally bother me in the least.

Anyone who declares "Hobbit Rock" is at all an accurate description of progressive rock is showing himself to know nothing about the subject matter.  I can't speak for neo-prog or latter day (nu-)prog, but definitive Prog distinguishes itself by being cross-genre, combining unlikely  influences into a cohesive whole, and being more interested in musicianship than in lyrics, story or song concept.

That said, Led Zeppelin and Rush have recorded the rare song to do with such themes.

Misty morning, clouds in the sky
Without warning a wizard walks by
Casting his shadow, weaving his spell
Flowing clothes, tinkling bell.

Yup, must be prog.

to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...
