Now that the band's latest album has been out for a few weeks and I've had a chance to get into it, is the new music a case of the Emperor's new clothes, or are the sands of inspiration running low?

After an intensive weekend's listening to Emperor of Sand, here's my take on it, examining whether it's a return to the more overt prog of Crack The Skye or whether it's something...different.

I don't find much Prog in Mastodon, nor do I find them that 'extreme', I have a few albums of theirs but I mostly return to Leviathan.
I did see the new album, but wasn't willing to part with $70 for the dbl vinyl.

Still not sure why these guys enjoy the level of popularity they do. I guess they write some alright tunes, and they're decent players/singers.

I think it's a great album, but no where near their best. It has a great mix of different styles they have experimented with in previous albums. Although, I found the soulful melodies (heard in songs like Naked Burn and Ghost of Karelia) to be lacking. Also, there were a few songs that seemed to have been made specifically to be played on the radio. Some of the standout songs for me are Word to the Wise, Roots Remain, and Jaguar God.

Roots Remain, Word to the Wise, and Ancient Kingdom are among my favorites from the band.  Really no "weak" songs though.  This album is their best since Crack the Skye and probably my new second favorite from them.  My expectations weren't high considering I was slightly (only slightly) disappointed with Once More Round the Sun.  This album blew me away!

PROG ON!!!

I, like others, can't figure out why this stoner groove metal band is so popular, and considered progressive.

Crack The Skye was good, everything else starts to sound the same.
