Both studios famous for formikg the "black" sound shaping what would be known as funk, soul and rnb.

you left out Sun Studios man...

not that it mattered.

Jamerson and Papa Zita..  greatest rhythm section ever.

Much respect to Hawkins, Hood, Beckett and.. oh... a little known guitarist named Duane Allman but Muscle Shoals was nothing on Motown.

If you have ever been there, which I lived there for a bit, you would not think anything like that was supposed to happen there. There is no reason what so ever for that area to be an epicenter for music, why on earth would the Stones want to record in that city?? You can't get there from here!

Both Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound recorded/helped create some of the greatest songs ever, dunno why. All I know is when you go to those studios and the surrounding areas its in the air, the river, its all over the place, you can feel it.

Motown is king, but there is nothing like Muscle Shoals, impactful.

What I know is that in the world of soul, all the Southern soul (Stax, Hi, Muscle Shoals, Fame, New Orleans) beats all the Northern soul (Motown/Tamla, Vee Jay, Philadelphia International), though it is a squeaker. A little bit of what gets the South over the finish line too is how the soul scenes helped feed other music as well.

Do Stax and Hi beat Shoals? Probably. But Shoals packs quite the punch. Sorry, Berry Gordy:

I'm a Motown man myself. Helped me many a-times in the bedroom quarters.

I have the BR and the sound track. It's an amazing story. I worked in Sheffield and drove by the Shoals studio 2x a day and everytime I thought about the artists that walked in and out of that unassuming bldg.
