Rush’s Exit Stage Left is a live album I’ve
tried over the years to reconcile the good with the disappointing, but it still
gets a lot of love in many quarters, so I thought I’d revisit it in its most
recent edition (the Sectors set remaster), and guess what….? Edited by Valen - May 04 2017 at 00:53 |

I have a soft spot for Exit as it was one of my first Rush albums. For years, I preferred the live version of Xanadu to the studio version.
I do think they muted the crowd noise too much. The band members have admitted that was not the best approach. In hindsight, I think it would have been amazing to get a live album that predated Moving Pictures. I've looked at boots on YouTube from that time and If I had to pick a Rush "god" set list, it would be from the Hemispheres tour or possibly the Permanent Waves tour

It was in the store on a Friday then. It was supposed to be on the shelves on Monday. I was supposed to wait until then.
I don't think so. I explained the situation to the store manager. I got my copy. |

Actually, I do believe after Moving Pictures their albums got less interesting. There's still some very good songs, specially in the 80's (in the 90's they got even another step below), but mostly I could do without their songs... that's until Snakes and Arrows (and then Clockwork Angels), which are really great).

Exit, while a solid live album, wasn't nearly as good as All the World's a Stage.

It's not an unusual opinion. A lot of Rush fans bailed after Moving Pictures. I didn't discover Rush until 1980 so I was just getting started. However, as a new Rush fan, even I was surprised by the differences between MP and Signals.

Well, I just started checking them out a few years ago... still before "Clockwork Angels", but they had already released everything else. Though I did check out their 70's work first, and after that I only intended to buy a few live albums to get their best songs from the rest of the time span... however, I did find two boxsets with exactly the albums I didn't have already (first the one with the albums from "Presto" up to "Snakes & Arrows" (I had just got "Clockwork Angels", so it was excellent it was not included yet), and then the one from "Signals" up to "Hold your Fire" (including "A show of Hands"), both sets at the price of perhaps 3 albums (perhaps more, if you got said albums really cheap), so I just had to get them, and ended up having their whole discography. I still haven't finished listening to all the albums (I mean, I did listen to them all already, but haven't given them all their fair amount of spins to make up my mind about them). |
