Hi all,

After rating hundreds of albums, here's my first forum post!

I was just thinking it would be super useful to be able to search for PA users whose ratings are similar to yours.  Then to discover new music, you could look through albums they rated highly.

Is there already a system for this?  If not, is it possible to download a rating database to tinker around on my own?

Cheers,
Robert

I think you could try last.fm. that highlights users with similar tastes.

AdultFriendFinder...oh wait, you're talking about music....

Just go through the reviews of albums you like and see who else rates the albums the same way you would.

There is no user database analysis tool here like on last.fm. Your best bet is to scout the appreciation threads for acts you like and interact with those users. Or just check the other reviews of members who have related highly your favorite artists.

You can go to your favorite album - look for a user that rates it 5, go on his profile - then sort ratings from high to low. That's what I do and I found multiple great albums like this

I've tried to encourage others with similar tastes to mine to post 'discoveries' in the following thread:

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!  Maybe I'll start a thread like deandob's.

I like your approach, Julien -- that's pretty much what I have been doing.  (I started by looking at users who rated Asturias' Cryptogam Illusion 5 stars.)

It's just that machine learning/classification is so easy and powerful nowadays, and there's so much good data on this site... :)

Wouldn't it just be easier to find bands who are similar to the ones you already like? There is a website called proggnosis where if you put in a band you already like say "Genesis" they will list a few different bands that are similar to Genesis. You can also do a google search for "bands who sound like...." or you can just create a post on here with the subject "Bands similar to Yes" or whatever. :)

Easier, yes, but I'm guessing not as powerful.

I've used music recommendation services, sometimes with good results.  But I like this community (generally users have taste more similar to mine, and ratings are more thoughtful, than elsewhere on the web), and I could use an excuse to do some coding and analysis!

It's not looking promising, though, so I think I'll do as you and deandob suggested and start a recommendation request thread.

I have bookmarked a few PA members with similar taste. Very usefull thanks to the ratings.
I also use bandcamp "follow" option to see what members with similar taste to mine do buy, almost real time (received through email, very convenient)
