Topic: king crimson (red) Posted: May 13 2017 at 17:47 |
At last i finally listened completely to the king crimson album red ,i all i can say it reminded me of black sabbath now just wait crim loyalists ,i believe the songs speak for themselves , but i do believe this is a standout prog classic ,but i think we can all agree songs like RED and ONE RED NIGHTMARE are are almost or rather say are heavy in a sabbath and deep purple kind of way.I know much has been said about the extreme drumming of bill bruford and just outstanding bass riffs by john wetton but i truly find david cross the most underated musician his parts simply im in awe of but the true masterwork is of course STARLESS .Sorry crim fans but i just love FALLEN ANGEL a minor song but very worthy of note ,i guess robert fripp definitely did not want a radio friendly or commercial album, kudos for being the driving force, again i am a long time fan being 52 at first listen, maybe im just getting old ,many fans believe this to be the best ,but then i still prefer the softer melodic approach like I TALK TO THE WIND oh well what does ancient prog fan like myself know anyway, thanks for reading peace

I suggest "Red" was created with full of the strong intention by three powers (John, Bill, and Rob) to overwhelm their previous works. They would have wanted to say they could create such an incredible, powerful stuff, I imagine?

I like the album well enough. Indeed, the best thing from it is "Starless", but since I had gotten before some live albums from the same era, with David Cross still in the band, and the first versions I heard of Starless were from those live albums, well, I was rather disappointed when I found out that on this album he was not playing that beautiful violin melody (which was replaced by the guitar)... and for me that melody was made to be played with violin, so I just prefer it live. As for the title song, I rather prefer it played by the double trio (and the new version from the new line-up is also much better). Red Nightmare and Fallen Angel took me longer to apreciate, but I have come to like those ones too. It's providence the one I never really came to like... if they were going to include an improv, I guess the one called Ausbury Park, from the USA album (and going on with different names on the Great Deceiver box-set) would have been a much better choice.

Three shades of Red. Soul, body and mind. A conclusion to progressive rock, an introduction to punk rock.
What am I saying ?

Lark's, Bible Black and Red. Best 3. USA plus the later The Great Deceiver live box. That's all you need.

Plus, it's got another concert with my very favourite version of Starless.
