Iron Maiden's "Empire of the Clouds" is just sublime. One of the best things I have heard in a while.

Wry smile this morning at how this thread is paradigmatic of a certain type of PA thread.

1. Noob starts thread. "Why isn't there any X any more?? It used to be so great when bands were all doing X, but now nobody does X because modern bands suck! Just name me some good modern X." Subtext: "Bet ya can't, because there isn't any."

2. PA headz post 150 examples of modern X.

3. Noob never returns to thread and is generally not heard from again.

4. PA headz, drunk with the joy of sharing their latest obsessions, nevertheless continue to add to the thread for the next seven years.

He's slapped silly with modern epics.

Yeah this is a recurring thing around these parts.
He may just have found a couple of pieces to his liking but were to embarrased to admit to actually liking something that wasn't produced 40 years ago.

^As mentioned earlier on this page we're basically just throwing tracks down the rabbithole here. The OP wasn't interested in listening to new epics. On the contrary he seems more content with having proven his "point" ie modern epics are poor.

Is the prog epic dead? I don't know but my guess would be probably not. However, I think it's mainly something symphonic bands do and I don't think most modern bands(specifically those from this decade) fall into that category. I don't think many crossover prog bands are doing the longer songs. I don't really know for sure but it's just a feeling I get.

If we go back to the previous decade bands such as Big Big Train, Transatlantic, the Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Wobbler, The Tangent, IQ, Deluge Grander and others did epics and yes some of them are recent but those bands have been around longer. I think most newer prog bands are focusing on other things.

I guess it all boils down to what one defines as an epic...but then again pretty much 90% of all the new prog artists I bump into here on PA make looooong tracks. Be that symph, neo, psych, avant, crossover, kraut whathaveyou.

The following all make retro styled prog with heaps of epics and solos galore:

Jordsjø
Astra
The Winstons
The Psychedelic Ensemble
Willowglass
Magic Bus
Sound Of Contact
Sky Architect
The Tea Club
Hooffoot
Karfagen
Karda Estra
Phideaux
Unreal City
Ingranaggi della Valle

aaaand the list literally goes on and on and on. Truth be told I have a hard time trying to come up with a single modern retro styled prog band that doesn't do epics....and there are literally thousands of retro styled prog bands out there.

As for crossover acts, post rock and modern metal? Just as many make long tracks. Again whether one hears them as prog epics or not is entirely subjective.

No. The prog epic will never die, because we have all the past epics to listen to and enjoy. And bands are continuing to make them. I mean, Marillion joined the party last year by including three songs over 16 minutes on their most recent album (El Dorado, The Leavers and The New Kings). The Tangent have added further to their arsenal of epics this year.

And, as it just about falls within the 10-year period issued by the OP, we have the mighty Sleeping in Traffic by Beardfish, at 35:44 managing to out-epic many of the great epics of our time.

A very valid observation - whilst the musical tropes of classic prog may have had relatively little influence outside the genre, the scope that prog introduced to popular music has bled through into all non-mainstream genres from ambient to metal - and received critical acceptance. When Yes released a double album with just four tracks in 1974 this was widely ridiculed as the exemplar of bloated self-indulgence. Now in 2017 Bell Witch can release an 83 minute one track album and everyone thinks it is rad.

Hi,

Kinda hard to decide ... epic's ... but in my book, Klaus Schulze is the king of "epics" ... when over the years he has made more out of this universe stuff that makes some of the rock stuff mentioned here ... really poor high school stuff!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
