Topic: What's happening? Posted: June 12 2017 at 21:26 |
Two weeks a go, Roger Waters' new album became available. At this point, it has 6 reviews. I don't know about you, but I'm quite alarmed. I mean, imagine if the Beatles released their newest album, and 6 people bothered to write about it. Is this it? Is prog over? Is rock finished? I think it may well be. Neil Young said rock and roll would never die. Neil's still alive. But I'm not sure rock is.

I'm not even really thinking about Roger Waters per se, nor prog especially. NME recently released their poll of the best albums of the year so far, and most of the albums seem to be electronic, rap, grime, and pop. Hardly any rock at all. This is the NME. And they couldn't even sell their mags anymore, they've had to give it away for free...

I just thought of a very perverse joke about the name of this website/forum that would probably get me banned, just try and imagine something (gulps)

I wouldn't be too alarmed about lack of reviews for it (at least on the Prog Archives) at this point. The amount of new reviews posted by Reviewers for the site is down quite a lot anyway, and been that way for a while. I'm sure it's had a ton of votes though?
Besides, it takes a lot of effort to write a review, and that's after committed repeated listening to something enough times to be able to form an opinion. Also add a side order of `I have nothing better to do with my time/I just want to ramble and discuss this album but no-one in my real life has any interest in it/I apparently have too much free time/f*ck my life' etc...
But apart from that, it's a pretty `heavy' album with a lot to cover from a lyrical perspective (and I more or less piked out on that aspect in my review), and from where it fits into Pink Floyd/Roger's solo history, and THEN there's still the actual music to explain. I'm honestly exhausted already thinking about it again!
You'll probably find more reviews will slowly pop up, as it's not something that can be digested quickly and easily...there was a new Pink Floyd's `Endless River' review just a day or two ago, and that came out a couple of years ago now.

But Roger Waters is not The Beatles? Hell he was never even close to that level of popularity - not even with Floyd. I genuinely don't understand why the music world should be up and about because of a new Waters album. People come to see him in concert...especially if he does Floyd material, but I can't recall anyone mentioning any Waters solo material the few times I've seen him 'in the flesh'. If Floyd reunite I will understand...but I can't get worked up about the fact that the whole rock world isn't jumping up and down because an old warhorse like Roger releases an album. His solo material has never been that revered. Ask anyone on the street about Floyd and they will know a tune or two. Ask the same folks if they can name a single tune off a Roger Waters album The Beatles were successful on their own - even after breaking up - Floyd not so much. I don't blame the public though. The last really great thing I heard from Floyd was The Wall. I rather dig Delicate Sound Of Thunder as well but it doesn't count. I don't feel any of their solo works reached that level of greatness. Always something missing, which to me personally, is testament to just how brilliantly they sounded together. Sum of parts and all that. All that being said I still wish Roger the best. I love the man but his recent work bores me to tears.

Yes, there's a big difference between the status of the all consuming FM Radio rock station beloved Pink Floyd of the 70's and 80's, and the solo careers of the two frontman only followed by the chosen few (well, few in comparison) loyal followers of what came before and after that period.

A new Roger Waters album is comparable to a new Robert Plant album. Both were huge with their respective bands but on their own they never managed to pull in the same crowds...unless they cheat and do Floyd and Zep classics.

Maybe Rog should tear out his hair and try to appeal to the bored lovely housewife demographic that Phil Collins had so much mainstream success with, Dave!

Yeah I'd love to see/hear that! Especially if he goes all Motown on us - just like Philosaurus did. Hah!!! I can just imagine Waters trying to cover Martha & The Vandellas' classic Dancing In The Street

I don't know about reviews, but I believe is selling quite well. Not in the millions of course, but the numbers seem to be ok.

Perhaps Roger's accountant can submit a review to assuage the concerns of those who fear his client's impregnable prosperity is somehow at the mercy of a feckless record buying public.

Actually it has seven reviews but that's still not that many. It does have a total of 80 ratings though. I think the lack of reviews has more to do with more people being lazy with writing reviews than a lack of people buying the album.
