I recently came across a discussion thread about progressive hip hop, and it got me thinking.
What if there was a genre that crossed complex, jazz-centric drumming, the record scratching technique, and layered sampling?
Would that not be cool as hell?

Kendrick Lamar has some really cool stuff that could be considered progressive hip hop. I just don't think the term has caught on yet but it certainly has been done. Not to rain on your parade of course. Please make more!!! I've had the same idea and have some works of my own in the mix ;)

Damn you for stealing my idea Tongue
Classical music isn't dead, it's more alive than it's ever been. It's just not on MTV.

Sampling wouln't be the most atractive thing of hip hop to use in a prog context, since if music is sampled, it might as well be played. But I can imagine hip-hop using more melody, more music. I guess it's keyboards that would work best if they would really be used in an interesting way. And about drums, I would rather think some bunch of tribal drums would work very nicely with the rhythm for hip hop (I guess something between what Jimmy Page and Robert Plant used on their UnLedded album, and what King Crimson is doing right now with 3 or 4 drummers). Then perhaps add some gospel choirs.

Or else, just have some straight prog band doing their own straight prog thing, and have some rapper into the mix, similar to what Linkin Park has done with metal (or Within Temptation on their last album), only with prog instead.

Nope, treat the rap elements like Zappa treated speech in his guitar solos.

There was acid jazz; I'm not too familiar with the artists but I heard some that was good stuff (IMVHO).

I once heard, on the radio a long time ago that Jon Anderson had an idea for a rap / opera. (Ohhh goddd I thought).

Hasn't yet materialized. (Yes) ARW debut?

The thing is matching the styles of rhythms. Rap and hip hop has not progressed, although it has got worse than the slightly more rhythmic and intricate '80s numbers. But I am not, nor ever going to have expertise here.

Probably a waste of time unless that track Rush did on Roll The Bones is as good as that was going to get. Just as Test For Echo (Prog / grunge) was as good as that nightmare was ever going to aspire.

Prog is art music while most other pop type music is roots oriented. The fusions have been done.

Now if Stevie Wonder (Innervisions) type soul was oriented to say, Alan Parsons Project music then we might have something to consider.

Hip-Hop is not so much the complicated drumming, just a simple deep easy (until trying to play it) funk.
I do love the sonic and ambience and seriously think they match the Prog soundings of Wish You Were Here.
It comes down to the vocal styles. Although one thing in Hip-Hop is the boasts.
So Roger Waters is more capable of adjusting!

Portishead, Massive attack and Tricky and the various offshoots certainly made in-roads into 'Prog Hop' in the 1990's in my opinion; maybe its more influenced by Krautrock elements than Prog rock but MA's 'Mezzanine' certainly had some very progressive elements and in amongst the many genre's that influenced Portishead, you can hear elements oflate 60's early Proto prog/psych such as harvest era BJH, Procul Harum etc. Bristol has always been very 'open' musically and embraced allsorts of musical cultures and styles.

Here's one artist's attempt at Prog-Hop. This does contain explicit lyrics for anyone that wishes to avoid this.

To be honest, I think your idea is already real.

This album is the closest thing that has ever come to being progressive hip hop by the way. I recommend it.
