Good golly Miss Molly, I can't believe I have missed the previous posts here in Cans world since the beginning of the year.... have not been here in PA as much as I used to, as work, capchas, health, considering moving, life, etc..... keeps getting in the way.

Anyway, David, glad to see you still hanging around, and holy bananas indeed what an impressive list of Cans to have been through.  I have not boned up on the HE500 to know what they offer, but can only imagine higher fidelity than the 400s.  The HD700s sound lustful!!  Speaking of lust, love the Dolly costume! LOL

Nick, I see you are still at the top of your audiophile game!  Do those headphone cables really make a noticeable difference?

And welcome Noni to the wonderful world of Hifimans along with the rest.

I've never been happier. My god!!!!!

Gorilla glass baby
So did you pay through the nose or somehow found a way to evade the used car price?
Just kidding. I am wildly envious of you. That thing looks beautiful!

I am in the process of selling off my hd700 and Audiofly iem plus some other gear. It's been a fun ride up until now but I am trying to thin out the heard...and maybe get one really good closed back. I can't imagine anything beating out my Hifiman.

I am still using my Aune x1 but with a spdif converter so as I can run coaxial from my laptop (huge improvement in sq - all distortion seemed to jump out the window. X1 feeds my Myryad z40 head amp and I'm good to go.
I recently partook in some blindtests of amps and dacs. It all started out with me trying out my Hifiman on a more powerful amp thinking it'd revealed a new gear in the can. I was sure I could hear it...until I had a chance to a/b it with my own...and surprise surprise if the gear didn't magically disappear. I saved about 700€ on a Violectric V200. Score!
I have also thought about upgrading my dac to a audio-gd r2r, but I can't be bothered now as I couldn't tell the difference between my Aune and a 2000€ Bel Canto once I got my back to them and let my friend do a little switching.

Instead I used money on sour beers, music and of course a new headphone AKG Q701! It's basically just a porn version of the K701 with removable sexy green boa constrictor cables...but I almost instantly regretted having sold off my old K701s, so it was brilliant to get back together again.
Another can I regret selling? My Ultrasone hfi-2400. Best can ever for electronic music (beats out the pro900 imo).

Hi Jim
I hope the health issue is over with. The rest of the stuff that constitutes life tends to flow much easier when one is functioning properly.
Oh believe you me the he500 is out of this world! I don’t see myself selling it unless someone wants to fork out a thousand bucks and a tiger. Then I’ll reconsider.
The hd700 is an awesome headphone but is has lost it’s place in the apartment to my new Q701. Truth be told I prefer my Hifiman but do so need a summercan to use when the weather is behaving like it is atm. 25 degrees and blue skies going on two months now and nothing seems to change. Here in Denmark that is unusual to say the least - more like impropable to the absolute max. The hd700 while light still sports pads that get too hot for me...which isn’t a problem with the AKGs velour. The Q701 is also lighter so yeah the little guy in the upstairs cockpit took a decision.

Nahh these days I find myself contempt with what I have. The only thing I see myself purchasing in the near future would be some open planar in-ears like the Audeze iSines or the Monoprice copycat M300. Get that liquidy planar sound in a small portable package.

A pleasant surprise in my work email, evidently it is my 35 year anniversary of working with the same #$%&^*&# darn company!  For that disgusting achievement I get to choose an award from some online gift company.  Anyway, among the slim pickings of choices there were 2 wireless headphones that were in there that caught my eye over all the bling, golf clubs, watches, grills, power tools, etc....

They were Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H4 and Sennheiser PXC 550.  Right now thinking about the PXC 550s as they offer Noise Canceling in addition to the rest.  Both are wireless Bluetooth which I would not have bought for myself otherwise.

Anyway, anybody out there in can land have any exposure to these cans?

I don't know these models, but if you want to use your cans during a commute or in a work environment noise-cancelling is really a great thing to have, I'd say a must.

^ My thought also.  I have test drove noise-cancelling Bose before and was impressed. The Senns reviews indicate they are not as good as the Bose in that category, but the sound quality was much better.

Thanks Jose, don't think I would have lasted this long if the majority of the job had not been on the road to different job sites...but yes a form of slavery :)   I guess another 35 years and I might get the better gift.

Yes I believe it will be the Senns as I can still use a wired connection to it to get a better quality sound if I don't need to use the wireless.  The Bluetooth app which has an equalizer adjusts and other stuff seem interesting  but would have to see how well it really works.  I am curious if anyone has tested or used both as a comparison.

I did choose the Senns PXC 550 Wireless Headphones and they are amazing to be wireless!

Only spent about a day and a half with them.  They have that classic Senns sound and excellent clarity via Bluetooth.  Still getting used to the touch controls on the right earpad.  The noise cancelling is very good, but not quite as good as the flagship Bose wireless although very close, but the sound quality is better in the Senns.  Phone works excellent with it as it has built in microphones.

The app is a bit of a disappointment, but it is not really needed and they can improve it.

First wireless headphone in my assemblage of headphones and free....if you call 35 years of work free.

Hi Jim. I see you made the right decision! I would have gone with the Sennheiser as well, although I really really prefer the build quality and design of B&O.
Never owned a wireless one before but have tried them on many occasions at work. I work with autists and there are a few who genuinely can't live without headphones and their favourite 'insert extremely annoying Disney-like cartoonish muzak'. Heh...
They don't sound halfbad and I love the freedom that comes without the wire. Only two things stopping me from getting some: 1) I am not a fan of having yet another thing that relies on power in order to work 2) I have waaay too many headphones as it is
Inspires by Simon, and pretty much half the freakin music lovin world, I got my hands on a brand new (used? Nahh but sold as one) hd600 and it sounds absolute amazing right now with Between's Electric Silence. In fact every album I have in my collection made from before ca 1985 sounds brilliant through these cans. Some newer electronica and other such genres that have elements of deeeeeep bass will sound great out of them but not outstanding like fx with a planar headphone that renders bass so effortlessly and true - especially those deeeeep notes from the bottom of the well.
Inspired by Uwe who swears by the AKG K240, a can he's used since the 70s I believe, I got one of those too! Well it was the mark 2 version without the gold on the cups which annoyed me slightly but then again I got free velour cushions to boot so who's complaining...but yeah anyway I fully understand why Uwe moves these things because you can pretty luch take everything I just said about the hd600 and apply it to the k240. Alright they're more flimsy and fit more losely on your head, but it also ads a bit of comfort. They're slightly less detailed than the hd600 but the stage is bigger.
Then I bought the Ultrasone pro2900 because I genuinely regretted having sold off my hfi2400. I missed that completely different sensation and ultimately once you settle in: beautiful space of music. It stops feeling like a headphone and more like you're in a room of music a la my Hifiman...but different hah! No surprise there. Dynamic and planar headphones always sound very different even if the tuning is identical. That is certainly my experience.
What more? Errrm.... oh yeah inspired by Jim's encounter with the Beyerdynamic dt990 and finding one dirt-cheap...well I just couldn't help myself. Probably one of the biggest surprises! This phone makes EVERYTHING sound great! Do you have old classical concerts that normally sound like faeces? No worries get the dt990. Same goes for old crappy blues/punk/folk/whathaveyou - this can will transform your trash into sonic honey....and it's not like it does it by rolling off the treble or offering less detail. Having owned the dt880 (twice!) I'd say it has about the same level of clarity and detail, but the dt880 literally punishes badly recorded/produced music. The dt990 doesn't. Aand it also works a charm with new music becasue of it's wonderful bass. I think it's a steal at the current used-prices. What 5-70 bucks for this kind of sound quality? Literally insane. It's not even expensive from new.

I forgot about my closed commuting can: the Ultrasone hfi-780. Mmmm. Sounds brilliant with just about everything..except for the first The Smiths album. So strange because I can put similar sounding/produced albums on and they sound great. Maybe the headphone is just objecting to The Smiths in general? I know folks like that in the real world. I can relate though, Morrisey is perhaps the whiniest whiner of all whiners even beating out Thom Yorke and Mark Hollis by several leagues.

9 headphones? Madness....
So much so that I decided to sell 3 of them. Not because they sounded bad or inferior but because my apartment was beginning to look like a radio-operator’s hobby shack.
I sold the DT 990 because the piggy tale cable drives me nuts...as well as the K240 because I tend to reach for the hd600 as they stay firmly in place, on my head, even when I’m lying in bed.
Still waiting for someone to pick up my DT 770 as it too sports this incredibly irritating pig tail.

So yeah I was basically down to 6 cans! Score.
Then I looked around at what I had and decided that I most definitely need an easy to drive open headphone and somehow must’ve ordered the HE400s, the one Jim’s got. It is on its way as we speak....and so was the Ultrasone Pro 550 (arrived this morning!) because I surely need another closedback for home listening now that I am selling my DT 770...

Madness indeed...but it keeps me occupied at a time in my life where my back is always shouting for attention.
Haven’t listened to the new Ultrasone yet but it came in the mail this morning as I was about to go to work. Really looking forward to spending some time with it when I get home. I specifically ordered it because the holes in the cups where the sound emanates from perfectly mirror the ones found in my Pro 2900 and the more I listen to the latter the more the stage grows in size. My other Ultrasones don’t do this to the bewildering point that the Pro 2900 does, so I am really hoping that this new closedback does.

Top tips for people wishing to get into the world of headphones:
1) Do yourself a favour and listen to the thing before you but it...if you can.
2) Read the reviews BEFORE you purchase the headphone.
3) Comfort should be paramount. It is much easier to get used to a new sound signature than it is to an uncomfortable headphone.

Btw Jim: seeing as you already own the he400s then could give me the lowdown on how exactly it performs straight out of say an iPhone or similar stuff like a small mp3 player? I should probably have asked this question BEFORE I made the order, but it is literally impossible to hold back one's jazzy inclinations ie I jam with life and work out the problems later on.

^ LOL David, its a disease!  Down to 6 with 1 one the way.  I am only up to 4, 5 if you count my MEE M6 Pro earbuds which I rarely use anymore, not that they are bad sounding, just can't get used to earbuds.

Still have not seen or heard a Ultrasone of any model around these parts.

Regarding the HE400s with smartphones or digital audio players, they are great IMHO was the deciding reason I went for them over the HE400i as I did not need to use a headphone amp to push them to sound good.  So easy to drive.

BTW, I am still loving my wireless PXC 550 Senns, pretty awesome for wireless.

I thought it about time for the thread mascot to show up again.  So hard to find Dolly with cans (had to be careful with the wording of that).

Hephey!!! I had no idea Dolly was into planars!!! That is, if I am not entirely mistaken, either the original or mk2 version of the tXrp series. Neato!

No Ultrasones yet eh? You're missing out on...something else Been listening to my new PRO 550 almost exclusively because I love them so much. They are without a doubt the finest closedback I've ever listened to. It's everything that I wanted the pro900 to be: clear as rain, huuuuuge and very precise soundstage, mild u shaped signature and above all comfortable.
It sports the biggest stage I've heard in any closedback bar none. It's bigger than the hd600s fx and that it an openback headphone! Seriously this closed can comes the closest to sounding like an open of any I've ever tried. It's mindboggling. Maybe it's because of the clarity and those enormous cups making for a huge enveloping experience. It certainly is a highly enfatuating experience every time I put them on.

Thanks for the info btw. I feel much better now

Small anecdote from real life? My buddy sold off his beloved hd650 - a can he's been heralding as the best thing since sliced bread...because he's fallen for the Ultrasone hfi-15g that I bought him for his birthday. During our scorchingly hot summer here it was basically the only can he could wear...and so he did for nigh on 3 months straight. When he then went back to his Sennheiser he expected to be blown away by his old friend...but it didn't happen - at least not enough for him to keep it and the semi-expensive tube amp he had for it.
Alright he is also a 'one-headphone' type of guy so he had no reason to clutter up his house with nonsense. Those were of course his words and not mine. If I had a house to frolick in I'd probably own twice as many headphones

^ Don't think I  could ever be a 'one headphone' guy again... :)    Closed backs with a big soundstage!?!?!  Unheard of, Ultrasones sound like they are the real S_ _t!

Update on more experimenting with the Senns PXC 550s in case anyone who is looking to buy wants to know.  Using a DAP with the supplied headphone cable, they are hard to drive.  However using the USB cable to a computer or the like, the sound is excellent.

Getting the hang of the touch pad controls.  Swipe up and down for volume control, left to right for next track, etc..  If you need to hear something on the outside world you can tap twice and it turns on the microphones built into the headphone so you can hear someone talk or an announcement if you are traveling.  Tap once and your music or other audio un-pauses and continues.  The app still sucks and don't use it much, it does have a nice EQ function in it, but you have to be using the app for it to take effect.

Bluetooth phone function works absolutely fantastic.

Seems these are definitely geared to be a great sounding wireless headphone.

Well, i absolutely love this post.
Dave, i am so apologetic right now... Feel terrible it has taken me this long to respond to your wonderful audio musings.
Gorilla glass? You are goddam right ( as walter white would say)
Buddy. You are definitely playing the field with the many headphone tryouts you lend your sweet little danish ears to.

The only thing i will say. Those He600's will get beat if you keep going at the rate you are. Once you get into 2000$ + for headphone price tags you'll wanna cry sweet mama cause my god man it is serious territory for one's ear canal.

Save the coin. Get used gear. I did for johnny gorilla glass, then pull the trigger.

Dave, you are there now. You have heard the differences real audio gear can make.

As your friend i can only say... You are not done yet.

You will want more just as i do.

Now i want the Chord hugo M scaler for the qutest dac i am currently envying. Nothing says i love you more to my ear drums than 1000000 taps!!

Just look up Rob Watts. He is on the cutting edge of Dac technology.

Bye for now. Have to fly but i will talk to you soon.

Keep at it! It is the best hobby in the world. I really dig and share your enthusiasm.

Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Hello kind Jim.

Cables in the audio world are a touchy subject but with my experience and research they absolutely can make a difference. Most complain and say there is no scientific facts or background to say cables do in fact prove the quality of sound. If you think about it right down to the purity of the type of copper or silver you have in that cable or even the geometry layout to reduce electromagnetic fields or inductance, cables surely can bolster the signal strength or communication between all of your system synergy parts.
Remember. The better your equipment is the more demanding it is. Cables matter!

One more thing. My apologies for the late response. It has been one hell of a year for me.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Yep those Ultrasones are really something.
The more I hear about wireless cans the more intruiged I get.
I have been thinking about the new Audeze Moebius for the same....but right now I am in the process of selling off a few before I do anything.
I hope the controls are getting easier and that you by now are going by almost telepathic powers.

Edit: btw my Hifimans arrived a little while ago and they're wonderful! Oh my word... they sound awesome out of an iphone as well as my cowon plenue d (both share about the same output ie 1V). Sure enough there is yet another gear that unfolds when I plug it into an amp, but we're talking a minuscule increase in sq. Anyway I picked up this tiny dap by Xduoo called the Nano D3 and while it doesn't sport the 100 h batterylife of the plenue d, it beats it twofold in muscular strength with a 2V output. Just enough for the Hifimans to reach the ultimate "gear".

Currently selling the Cowon plenue d, q701, hd600 as well as the hfi-780. The Hifiman does everything the q701 does well but in a planar way (the q701 sounds like a brilliant headphone...but a headphone still...the Hifiman is like being there). The hd600 is going because I am saving up for the 800 and the hfi-780 because I'd rather listen to the pro550. I actually bought it as a portable can but I am more of an iem man on the go.

Well pheeew is all I have to say. I saw the pricetag and thought I’d gotten it wrong, but no sure this can costs the same as a used car. Glad you found one used.

I have played around with dacs a couple of times already as I’ve mentioned previously in this thread. More power to you if you feel it can enhance your listening, but I have still to hear a DAC that sounds different of better than my Aune X1. I recently had a Schiit Yggdrassil to play around with for a week and it yielded the same result in that I couldn’t hear any differences between it and my Aune.
Oh well I am actually rather pleased by the result as the moniis can be used far more usefully ie albums and headphones

Once you get the hd 800's you will notice major fidelity differences not just in your equipment (including DACs!) but your music sources as well. Be prepared. The hd 800's are not a kind headphone. Firstly, you need all star teammates to accompany them and well produced and mastered sources. If you do not do this for them you will hate this headphone. However, on the flip side if you give them all they deserve including decent interconnects, you have a world beater headphone. The hd 800's recreate a live soundstage and are the most dynamic headphones i have ever heard. More than the stax 009 .they are a bargain price tag wise, mostly because they are quite expensive to drive properly .
The Aune x1 is a decent dac but the qutest is on another level . you will hear the differences right away with a headphone like the hd 800's

I just cannot wait to hear your reaction .Wink
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

The schiit yggy DAC does not have the low end bass depth or the midrange imaging like say a qutest .DACS make a huge difference, dave .
Some may yeild similar results but i assure you there are big reasons why dacs differ in price. I strongly believe that once you purchase a flagship headphone from a company like sennheiser, audeze, ultrasound or even AKG you will start to really get why i may seem like a real stickler when it comes audio and the quality of it .

I do love however that you have been dabbling into a lot of good midrange hifi gear cause once you take a bigger plunge and get the heavy hitters you will happily sh*t your pants .it is no joke .

Funny thing is . the gear is getting better but the music sources are getting worse! Confused

Lastly .that cowon plenue is an awesome DAP . right up there with the best .
Portable audio never sounded so good! Surprised you are selling that guy .
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

I have actually tried the hd800 on a nummer of occasions - last was during blindtesting the benchmark DAC against my Aune and I still couldn’t hear any difference. My hearing is fine btw:)
Been talking to a friend of mine who works with audio professionally (studio) and he confirmed my findings in that he’d tried around 30+ dacs in his studio - some of which were TOTL gadgets over 3000$ - and never heard a difference whilst shifting between his most detailed studio monitors, hd800 and lastly his highly prized ribbon speakers.
He told me that all of this was in line with what science tells us ie the sonic upgrades in expensive dacs only really matter to bats, owls and other such critters with supernatural hearing abilities. We simply can’t hear those frequencies.

Alright I’ll stop now...I had this huge discussion with my Yggdrassil buddy from before about this very same subject - bear in mind right after he couldn’t differentiate between it and my Aune - and things ended up getting a little heated.
I have come to the conclusion that if people feel they get a better rig with x product, then it’s worth it to them

Edith: Oh and I am selling my Cowon because I found that the extra 1V my new Xduoo Nano d3 sports makes my HE400s, PRO2900 as well PRO550 better. They’re all cans that need just a pinch of power.
