Topic: Radiohead: Prog or Not? Posted: June 26 2017 at 13:44 |
Personally, I consider them to be solely experimental and not prog, but I have a friend who wholeheartedly believes they are one of the best "prog" bands ever.

Nope.......This is a classic band that for some reason people on this site push for them to be prog, makes no sense. I suppose if they are tagged prog, people will like them and their music better/more??

If someone called them prog, they must be. But it wasn't me.

They're alternative rock (that moved into electronic incorporated stuff) that had an "experimental" edge, no prog there though

Who cares?
...but just for the fun of it: Progressive? Yes. Experimental? Yes. Rock? Yes. Prog? No.
The Fall, Pere Ubu, PiL, Chrome, Cream, Edgar Broughton Band, Glenn Branca, etc etc are also acts that tick the same boxes...but they're not really prog.
Uhh doing an edit and crossing my fingers I won't get hit with a captcha. Just made a whole post over my laptop without it. I needed to pinch my arm...anyway I hope I don't jinx it.
Nope...too good to be true. Captcha'd

I wouldn't call them prog. I like them a lot and to be honest they are what got me into music in a big way as a teenager twenty years ago. Also discovered Can through them, ace.

Since there's not a specific definition of "Progressive", it's quite dificult to say, but I would say they are to some extent.

It makes no difference to label a band to make me like it.. If the music is good and I enjoy it then it's on my radar... There are lots of progressive bands I cannot stand, so Radiohead are not even close in my opinion as progressive.

Btw Scorpius you're doing it again you cheeky man! Just like The Endless River poll you're asking two different questions. 'Prog or Not' but the poll question is 'do you consider Radiohead to be a progressive band'. Those are two very different questions as any style of music can be progressive. The Beach Boys fx were very progressive in their day and helped push music forth, but they were never a prog band. Wu-Tang Clan sport a similar story only they populate an altogether different sounding area of music....but they were about as progressive as anything you can come up with.
Sure I get the gist of this poll which is why I posted earlier but I think part of why any of the new bands featured on PA have difficulty in gaining widespread recognition is indeed down to the fanbase slapping uncool and wholly unnecessary stickers on the music. I have done this too and probably still do to an extent, but I think it is unfair to jumble most of what is happening under the experimental rock banner into one homogenous pot - thereby also stretching the confines of what prog rock is. We see this all over the musical map though where everything seems to have get muddied with fx disco and rap artists suddenly heralded as rock in the RaRHoF. Most of this probably stems from misguided fans of x band/artist trying to rewrite history in order to highlight a mirage that never happened. 'Oh but it's true. Elvis did invent post-punk. Haven't you heard the unreleased basement tapes from Iggy Pop's old daycare?'. But, and this is the only question that matters in these prog or not discussions, do any of you guys and gals truly believe that any music produced in this day and age has a bigger chance of making it because it's prog? I think it is the exact opposite to be perfectly honest. Radiohead is above all of this because they made their fame under vastly different circumstances - mostly because they started out as a rock band, pure and simple. Stickers have since then been added but had they started out labelled as a new prog band (let's face it there are many bands starting out right this minute labelled as prog that sound even less like prog rock) they would most likely not have made an impact. No amount of 'Creep' can compete with an uncool label.

Not even close. Imagine this lot turning up with KC, Yes, Genesis, et al. Grunge meets punk and they both lose.
They've said no and for once I agree with 'em.
Still I suppose if you do have say, a punk collection where the star prize is never mind the bollox then this probably sounds like Celeste in comparison, with the virtuosity of Gentle Giant.

if tracks like Creep, Karma Police, My Iron Lung, No Surprises, High + Dry etc are considered 'prog' then I guess I really don't know what prog is.
