If you like an album do you try and listen to the band's other albums? aren't you curious? I am!
I came across many times an album that had many high ratings and other albums from the same band had NO ratings at all good or bad, strange! 
"Case & Point" the band "ARZ" has on their 2011, 70 ratings with OVER 4.0 average ratings, on their other 4 albums combined 8 ratings... shouldn't the people that rated high their 2011, try and get a hold at least of one other band's album if not all?Confused

Usually for me it goes something like this:

1. Discover new song, listen to album and like it a lot
2. Try to get into their other stuff but not really like it
3. Months later I try their other stuff again and start getting into it
4. Obsess over every single album they ever put out
5. Goto 1 but with a different band

My dad only ever had "the Yes album" by Yes. His second wife and my step mother when I was a teen only had "Fragile" by them. I don't get it at all. How can you only own one Yes album. That makes no sense to me. Yeah, I usually want to hear more of a bands albums. Even if I don't like the one I started with usually I will give the band a second chance. I think the very first King Crimson album I bought was "Islands." I almost stopped after that one but I'm glad I didn't.

Many fans do go on to pursue a band's catalog after liking a certain album but I think after many years as a music appreciator, one begins to see that few if any artists are infallible and the time, money and energy may be better spent exploring other groups.   Common pattern: First album good, second album better, third album either disappointing or brilliant, most stuff after that a letdown.  

On the other hand it can't all be gold--  having more than one or two really good ideas in a career is pretty rare, and so I sympathize with musicians who have never been able to creatively outdo themselves but keep on trying.   It is the life of the artist and it can be a painful, two-sided coin.

I like to investigate a band's catalog if I hear something that I like. Now a days, with spotify, pandora, etc, you can safely listen to a bands catalog without having to buy an album, and find out if it's worth spending your money.

Isn't that strange that such a pattern seems to be almost inevitable, we've seen it repeating over and over again.
(Fortunately with great many exceptions Big smile for our common delight - but that surely varies from one to another)

I would think most fans who are my age or younger and discovered prog in the 80's discovered a bands later albums first then went backwards. For those who got into prog in the 90's or beyond it's more difficult to determine. I actually don't think many people first got into prog in the 90's. If they did it was probably through Dream Theater or maybe Rush and who knows what Rush album they would have first heard. Smile

Yeah, I usually want to know more. At the beginning, I got a few discographies because of this... but now I can't always get to that point, mostly because I'm checking out other artists. Perhaps I'll try and get the most loved albums, plus a few live or compilation albums to get a good overview of their whole career... then I might be interested in certain albums given the songs I might like.

i usually obsess over new bands.
lately i've decided it's time to get into the grateful dead so in the last month or so i've been listening to a different concert each day, with all those "dick's picks" and "road trips" and full tour boxes... i think i've got music to listen to for the next two years :D

if I like an album from a band, I'll (obviously) check out their other albums. 
There are bands that I like just one albums (i.e. not prog, but Theatre of Tragedy, Flowing Tears, Sacred Reich, Moonspell), or just having a best of is enough (Mamas & Papas, Bob Marley, Alphaville).

If I like something, I not only have to hear everything else by the band, but everything associated with their constituent members!

Or, did. When I had the time and the spirit for the pursuit.
