^ And Caravan's .....Plump In The Night album. Which, of course, I thought that David Sinclair being the keyboardist at that point, developed his own synth (obviously, I must be half-spastic) but when I got the fantastic RPI album, Semiramis - Dedicato a Frazz, it all came into place.

There is a sweet thread on the Vintage Synth Explorer forum about Cluster's and Harmonia's gear.

Also, I didn't know it was used on Dedicato a Frazz, will need to revisit that one!

What, precisely, is meant by "keyboard" as above? They're all keyboards...

Oh, cool. I wasn't sure. I have met people before who don't like synths, or at least don't like them beyond a Minimoog.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but if I was looking at the credits for an album and somebody was credited for playing "Mellotron", I would be more interested in hearing it than if they were credited for "keyboards" or "piano"... although, "electric harpsichord" would catch my eye too.

Rhodes craps on mellotron

Edited by dr prog - August 09 2017 at 14:59
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

All that matters is the quality of the playing.

If people here are buying music because someone has a certain type of instrument, they need to frankly stop doing it.

As for "synthesizer", rather a broad church, folks. Mellotrons additionally come with a large number of tapes so the sound is highly variable.

From an musicians' perspective, I'd rather play anything other than a Mellotron. I have briefly dabbled on one. It really should, from a musicians' perspective, been merrily crackling away atop a large bonfire.

I have played Mankin Electronics' Memotron, a modern digital recreation of a Mellotron, much like Mellotron M4000D, a few days ago in Berlin. It had a great sound library and nailed those vintage Mellotron tones very well. The free Mellotron simulation for iPad named M3000 I think sounds also pretty darn good for a free tool. And I've heard a few Mellotron VSTs on the internet, which also come very close to the original. This leads me to thinking, it's not that difficult to simulate that instrument, is it? Sorry for getting a bit off-topic.
