Topic: Why do people not like nerdy albums? Posted: July 17 2017 at 07:08 |
A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Construkction of Light, and possibly Ummagumma all seem to get slated.

Isn't all prog rock considered nerdy by those who don't like it?
Generally those who don't like nerdy music, probably consider it un-cool and un-sexy, and most people under 35 like to think of themselves as cool and sexy and don't want to be connected with stuff that isn't.
Maybe...

We live in an instant gratification world. I have asked many friends this question who aren't into complex music. They say that they're just not interested in working to understand music. So i would simply say most people are lazy or unadventurous. That rings true for prog fans too as we see the more pop oriented Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd are infinately more popular than the most complex artists in the genre.

It depends on one's perception of nerdy. I considered any album by Devo to be nerdy and the band to be ultra nerds.

The cliches of bookishness and social ineptitude as applicable to those who like 'Prog' got very old a very long time ago. Prog fans can be just as prejudiced, mindless and idiotic as fans of any other genre thank you very much.

Every human being I've ever met in my life nerds away with something. Be that fashion, music, stamps, art, bicycles, South-Romanian foxes, movies, knitting, relationships, theatre, violence, drugs or porn. Each of these nerds will know the ins and outs (hoho) of their chosen muse ie they tend to dig complexity/depth/catharsis/enlightenment in completely different areas of the world. The word 'nerdy' though is wholly dependant on the person in question and I don't find any of the mentioned albums nerdy compared to the remainder of PA's database. Maybe the OP meant something else?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't even think that the albums you mentioned are nerdy per say. That being said, as Bill Gates said at a group of high school graduates "Don't make fun of the nerds, you're going to end up working for them". So don't make fun of music considered nerdy, you might end up listening to a lot of music inspired by it.

That's a very interesting and perplexing response you're received. For me, I have never worked to understand music. I either like something or I don't. I don't struggle to enjoy music that I just don't enjoy. Perhaps some people do but I know pretty quickly if I don't like something an move on.
I can't imagine only liking simple music. Yeah, that's awfully snobbish of me but the idea of only listening to what appeals to the masses is frightening to me. Some popular songs here and there, sure. We all have songs that we like that we might be embarrassed to admit to but to reject the unpopular?
Can't imagine living like that. Discovering previously unknown music is a joy in life. Kind of like discovering new foods to eat.

Yep. I plead guilty to total nerdiness, having a stamp collection which only spans from 1840 to 1864, covers just one country (GB) and is actually worth more than my house. And I go all over the country displaying it to other nerds. And I spend about 3 hours a day searching for new stuff for it.
One person's nerdiness is another's fascination.

Btw, even though I consider Devo to be nerds, I still liked them at times. The band's music might have been nerdy but how does that alter one's enjoyment of it. Is this related to peer pressure? "Dude, you do actually listen to these nerds? Bogus!"

Very true---I know what the OP means----it certainly wasn't hip to like prog back in the day---it's changed a bit. I mean do you have to be a nerd to like Game of Thrones? Maybe in the beginning but seems mainstream now

Yes, you do have to be a nerd to like Game of Thrones, just as you need to be a nerd to play Dungeons and Dragons. More excepted, but the nerd factor remains.

I guess i should have added that some of us have a natural talent for music that excels above others. I have a superb musical memory and even the most complex albums don't take me long to understsand but it's still work to become able to appreciate higher elevated music. It's just that it's a labor of love. The more music you listen to, the more second nature it becomes. Some people only find catchy pop melodic hooks to be worthy of their attention.

Now you have me wondering if there are any South-Romanian fox porn addicts out there

I couldn't agree more. That's where the adventurousness comes in. Jazz and prog are accumlated appreciative skills for most and many just don't want to put the time into it. Their loss

I'm absolutely baffled by these three proposed discs as being `nerdy'! So confuse...! KC's `The Construkction of Light' is noisy, aggressive and angular. `Ummagumma' is experimental, psychedelic and the Floyd giving into their most daring and self-indulgent avant-garde tendencies. ...and `A Momentary Lapse of Reason' is essentially over-polished AOR yuppie dinner party `prog'! but nothing even remotely nerdy, other than, as Blacksword mention, that the Prog banner overall often gets associated with `nerds' or being a `nerdy kind of music'. Maybe plenty of us fans are nerdy though (guilty, he says, admiring his `f**k my life' glass cabinet full of Transformers toys and slab of Spiderman comics in quick reach)!

Any music not about relationships and partying is inherently nerdy. Get with the program.
