Cool chart! But what if you are inept at being obsessive about being intelligent instead of being all three simultaneously? LOL

Then you are a dwenergerk.

Since this thread seems to be coming to some sort of conclusion... (yeah...right...) what's the opposite of nerd / geek? Are these the cool, beautiful yet stupid but rich people? What is the nomenclature required in grading this this strata of society / progressive rock community?

And it's a given that they, like me, will only like the first Asia album as all the interesting bits don't go on for long enough (even though it only plays in their background) for anyone to get bored or have an excuse to indulge in long term narcotic indulgence (unlike with Tales). Dweebs.

The same people in a higher social strata would be considered upwardly mobile achievers in business.

This is one of those kinds of topics that I'm wary about jumping into and make any conclusions until the topic starter steps into the conversation and expatiates on the premise.

That said, I've haven't noticed A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Construkction of Light, and possibly Ummagumma ever singled out and slated as nerdy albums. Ummagumma, which is my favourite of the three although I'm a dork rather than a nerd, I can imagine. I'm not that there aren't those who have called those albums nerdy, but I just don't get what it is with those particular examples.

Had you said Magma, Van der Graaf Generator/ Peter Hammill, Henry Cow, and Art Bears I think I would have got it a little more.

Incidentally, while some people use nerd as a badge of honour, considering the connotations of social ineptitude, to me it is not. As has been said, Prog (to use in a general, loose sense) tends to be seen as nerdy anyway. So do sci-fi, fantasy fans, as well as those who get excited about mathematics and physics. "Dude, that equation is totally gnarly."

As for the UFO image, Atomic Crimson Rush uses it, but I don't think of him as nerdy per se, although like most of us he might be on the nerdy spectrum. Having what is widely perceived nerdy interests does not make one a nerd. I'd rather be a geek myself, but I think it takes some effort.
Just a fanboy passin' through.

Ok. I just did a quick search. I never heard of the TV series UFO before but then again I'm from the US and maybe a tad too young anyway. Also, it turns out her brother was Nick Drake! Wow. Anyway, yeah she's my kind of nerd. Ok, maybe not now but back then(if I was older. Lol.).

I used to love UFO - More for the technology than the scantily clad girls - I only noticed them when I became a teenager in the days before the internet and mobile phones! (UFO was supposed to be set in 1980!, it was made in 1970). Bit like space 1999, it sort of assumed a level of progress than mankind was not capable of achieving! I wonder what's mostly getting in the way of the progress that the Anderson's assumed?

I think the OP is holding all prog artists guilty of nerd-ism by association.

Metal has a totally different meaning to it back then than today.
I caught a Meshuggah gig early this year and the crowd were much like myself ; folks that appreciate complex, heavy styled music, without a violent build-up of angst, negativity, identity crisis etc. just a bunch of people impressed with the band's Art.   The way it should be !!

TCOL: angular means nerdy
Ummugumma: what's more nerdy than the Grand Vizier's Tea Party
AMLOR: sounds like space rock

Why is nerdy pejorative

Because nerdy in part mean socially inept/ awkward, and boringly studious.

Mind you, those who complain that people are nerds and think that nerds lack social skills I might find uninteresting and lack the qualities that would make me want to associate with them.   It's relative. To the nerdy person, the un-nerd may be tedious and irritating.

Is angular music music for squares? ;)

There is, in my opinion, a "quirky" side to certain bands in the progressive music genre.  Bands like Split Enz, Godley & Creme/10CC, Todd Rundgren, Gong, The Tubes, and some others that escape me at the moment.

My wife is really into these bands - me, not so much.  I can't put my finger on what separates them as "quirky" in my mind - maybe it is because they often have whimsical or comical lyrics?  I don't know.

I remember seeing a synth magazine article back in the late 1980's that had an article with Adrian Belew and someone else, can't remember who, and the article headline was "Nerds of a Feather."  Cracked me up.

I don't know why. I personally find them really interesting. It adds something to the already enough complex and meaningful music. It makes you think about life and the world around you. It also makes you question your existence. Even people with spiritual lives can find them interesting.

Don't know about the third, but the first two I don't find "nerdy." I kinda' think you're fishing here.

Hey, I missed this Con d'Or thread (has he been bacl to post in it, or has he simply forhotten he's started it)

As for the graph, it's rather interesting (though I'd never heard of "dweeb" before, and my "dork" is anything but anti-social Big smile), but it's not like Prog has a monopoly on nerds

plenty of nerds are into techno or rap music as well (that's how techno started, actually)

BTW: wouldn't "dweeb" mean +/- "virgin", though
