Oh come on... there is nothing...NOTHING that is vaguely listenable that goes under the heading 'prog'. God know what 'avant gard, post math, indo raga extreme' etc means... all I know is that it's all awful. The whole point is that you take the stifling limits of basic rock music and take it further... longer... MORE melodic. I am so sick of bands that describe their music as 'influenced by the 70's greats with a new twist'. It all comes down to compositional ability... spending time writing a tune...duuh! Please tell me I'm wrong and name some modern exceptions.... in all honesty i bet you can't.

Like you I listen almost exclusively to music from the 70's but to say that prog is no longer being produced is quite a ridiculous claim. Today you have an immense pool of artists and with streaming services it can be really hard for them to generate revenues to tour, to get more albums out and to get big. The music industry has become very much saturated in recent years. Tons of progressive artists are out there, you just have to look beyond the Billboard Top 1,000,000 to find them. In fact, there are probably more progressive artists now than ever before in history.
Anyways like I said I don't have many examples of great post-2000 albums but that's probably only because I have not yet finished unearthing the innumerable 70's masterpieces. Let me just drop this here (many users will see that one coming):

I could list lots that I enjoy, but I suspect that you'd just say it's awful.

Given that you'd probably hate all the modern prog I like I give you a few in the symphonic sweet spot

It's hard to keep open what's already closed. But do stick around, we might jackhammer them open yet.

I can't agree with that, just because I know nothing in music.

Try Phideaux! Doomsday Afternoon or Snowtorch.
Or Dave Kerzner, New World. Both play modern prog with solid 70'es roots.

I no longer feel compelled to respond to these challenges any more with lists of bands. And yet, at the same time, I know exactly what the OP is talking about. As much as we realize there are many, many great current bands out there, there also should be no shame in admitting that there was something extra special about the early 70s. There's no right answer. Listen to what pleases you.

Strangely enough, original prog had heart. It had genuine soul and feeling, which warmed an otherwise technical music.

Don't I know it. My mother-in-law died recently and the funeral director seemed uncomfortable when I used the term dead, and would instead repetitively use the passed away phrase. I think that some coroners and forensic pathologists might still say that some stuff is dead, but never Prog that I've heard. Dr. Larry Pines: No matter what you think of me, I am not a murderer. Dr. R. Quincy, M.E.: Tell that to those seven de..., erm, delivered unto heaven people. |

OK, as I understand, it is modern prog that you dislike so much, but you do like 70's prog. I do like many modern bands/albums, but I guess I understand what you mean, and yes, there is something lost from the 70's that just doesn't seem to work anymore. I guess most of the albums I have come to love from the last years would bear the same problems for you that you already mentioned, but I might try and sugest "The Final Breath Before November" from Edison's Children. That one might just as well work. Otherwise, just keep looking for music from the 70's, there's a fair ammount of it that you would not need any more music anyway.
