I saw them at Huddersfield Poly back in about 1984. Can't remember if it was Geoff or Andy now. Great show, although not well attended. I used to have Fact and Fiction on cassette, and still have Live at the Target on 12", but it's probably had one playing in the last 30 years. I got it out a year or so ago, thinking "I used to really like them", but sadly my taste has changed and I couldn't get into them again. Probably it's a bit of an "angry young men" album, while I'm now a mellow middle aged man.
I saw a few neo-prog bands around the same time - Marillion, Pallas, IQ, and I have pretty much the same opinion of them, too.

If you read the Malcolm Dome / Kerrang review on the R/H side of Marquee gig flyer I posted you will see what I mean and he wasn't the only dumbchuck who had that view.. its certainly not mine.

Er, yes.. 'Fly High, Fall far' was the Pendragon mini-lp which came before the jewel (which I do have but signedWink).. I only worked in music (stage crew) for just under 2 years in my late teens but got to know a few people.. I also helped a local band out who had a brief support slot with Pendragon in 1983. Embarrassed

I should have said that I did and still do like the Art & Illusion mini-lp! I think the tracks were mostly written in GM's time but obviously utilized AS on vocals.. but the Clive Mitten instrumental 'Crab' was composed during the recording.. or maybe i'm talking B*****ks (again) I cant quite remember- I'm sure if I am someone will put me rightWink

Oh and despite what I said about Mullets, I too (for a while) sported a mighty one (with beady braidy bits too yuch!!)EmbarrassedEmbarrassedEmbarrassed

Fact and Fiction is as far as I know their best record, with Human Being being excellent.

Don't remember them from the 80's.I found out about Twelfth Night rather late sometime in the early part of the 90's. An old girlfriend gave me a tape of their music. But I didn't stay long with this girl so did not really play the tape too much. I think at the time I was more into Pendragon and Marillion which somewhat overshadowed Twelfth Night a bit.

Marillion, Twelfth Night and IQ were the best three neo prog band in the early eighties.

Agree on your selection.  Have to include  Pendragon and Pallas...  I love all five bands,  but Marillion were never that consistent for me over the years as a band.

 I love 'Live and Let Live' and did see the band around 1984 with Sears when they played supporting Pallas I belive at Hammersmith Odeon

My take on why they didn't rival Marillion in popularity is that they were weaker in the keyboard area. Mostly pad sounds and very much underdog to the guitar and six string bass, although it did make them different to other neo-prog bands. I belive Clive Mitten even played keys on Fact and Fiction as their keys player left for a while?

Twelfth Night is the only neoprog band who combined new wave and prog.
I've heard proghaters who like Twelfth Night because of their new wave-sound.

On the other hand a lot of proggers don't like Twelfth Night because they are too straight forward in their songwriting.

I find this rather weird how they feel...  I like the fact they were very original in sound and never tried to copy anyone.

Correct. Clive covered on keys because Rick Battersby left. Rick returned for the shows, and the next album, Art & Illusion.

If you listen to some very early IQ they were trying to incorporate some more new wave type sounds too.. but it was more self-conscious with them.. at least with Twelfth Night it was entirely unconscious.. I think this was why they received a certain amount of flack about their style and production values.

But for me 'Fact and Fiction' has something more from the heart and has an element of social and political conscience which was lacking in most other of the genre at that time (ok, Marillion had 'Forgotten sons'..)
