Rock before prog was fun, light, uncomplicated and youthful.   After prog not so much.

Rock was rock n roll, jazz was jazz, classical was classical and folk was folk. No one thought of combining them and they never really intersected much(if at all). Folk rock does predate prog though and so does classical music in pop and rock but prog mixed things up even more and put them all in a blender.

Don't know. When I first got interested in music, I was introduced to Jimmy Hendrix, Cream, The Moody Blues, etc. My first LP was Jethro Tull"s "Stand Up", and I never really got into anything else, until later, when Jazz, Classical, Folk, World music called my attention. I could never get into the "Radio" music, and it has never caught my interest.

Ah, the now defunct Angelus Records, not to be confused with Angeles Records run by this guy - -

Strangely enough Angelus Records also released obscure hard rock and folk bands, making odd bedfellows with its Christian music acts ~

Foundation Angelus PS

Before Prog there was
"No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death: and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short" (Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan).

I was 11 or 12 when I fell in love with Queen and Phil Collins.
Soon after, when I was 13 or 14 I already picked up Saga, Marillion, Camel and Barclay James Harvest.
I had a pop-encyclopedia, and I found out that my favorite music was called Symphonic Rock, so I started obsessively collecting anything and everything that was called Symphonic Rock back in that day and age (around 1990).

I never really listened to music before that time, because we didn't really watched tv at my home.
I never had a father so all music came from my mother: John Denver, Neil Diamond, etc.
Of course I picked up a few 80's popmusic; Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bon Jovi, but I didn't really like dancemusic back then.
