Tough call between UZ, SN, and Present.
I'll go with SN this time around.

This was totally a tie between Present & Univers Zero. I voted for Present because, uh, I had to vote for someone. Finalists include Shub-Niggurath (Man With Hat, I feel your pain), Art Zoyd (but I voted for them in an earlier poll and I like to spread the love), Lindsay Cooper, News from Babel, Offering & Vasilisk (love that album title). I'm not familiar with: Leven Signs, Picky Picnic, Clivage, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Elicoide, Non Credo or Talk Talk. As I've mentioned, Hounds of Love just doesn't knock me out the way it does most people.

Kate
Would have voted for Marillion - Season's End if had been an option. Important (and excellent) album that showed a distinct change of direction for 'neo prog'.

The crossover metal scene ruled those years. Dimension Hatross for sure. Watchtower - Control and Resistance being another favorite from the era.

what is crossover metal? I know of crossover thrash which is a mix of thrash and hardcore-punk, i.e. Suicidal tendencies being the best known example.

sorry I didn't use the exact sanctioned nomenclature. I grew up in a place where any metal band using a fast 2 beat was considered part of the crossover metal band. Black/thrash/death it was all just metal getting a hardcore punk injection.
