Topic: Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree Posted: February 28 2018 at 08:08 |
Hi,
Not sure I like this poll, since, for me, PT is a Pink Floyd for the 90's and 00's.
The comparison is a bit too weird for me ... it was a completely different time and place, when PF did their thing, and it was the beginning of the internet when SW started his thing. In many ways, SW and then PT, got where they got because of the Internet ... PF had to hit the road and make things work, and their value in the "history" of rock music is far more important than PT's.
That does not make PT not as good ... PT is great and deserves every hand shake and pat on the back for a really good job well done.

Porcupine Tree are not in the same league. They have their moments but they are prog for beginners. Floyd were masters of their craft and completely original in their sound. PT were a mish mash of thirty years of influences. Sometimes the formula worked very well (In Absentia) sometimes it was a snore fest (The Incident) Sometimes it was simply a poor mans Floyd (Sky moves sideways)

I do like PT a lot - but PF are on another level.

Floyd. Easy choice, particulalrly Water's lyrics. I like the bitterness and anger.

Pink Floyd. PT is my second favorite band of all times, the first is PF.

Pink Floyd of course. PT's lyrics are good, but I prefer Floyd's approach to writing theirs.

I think any answer other than Pink Floyd here is baffling. The maturity and grasp of the lyrics is simply so far ahead and if you want to indulge in a bit of grown-man-spewing-strangely-teen-angst nonsense like Porcupine Tree, The Wall is clearly a better version of it. And you have Barrett, who is very much the thinking man's Jim Morrison.
"And the sea isn't green and I love the queen
and what exactly is a dream? and what exactly is a joke?"
I don't mind PT's earlier lyrics, though FoaBP is just embarrassing, but I don't think they hold up here.

I listen to each for the music. Lyrically neither do a whole lot for me.

PF was completely overplayed among my circle of friends. Especially DSotM. Every f'n weekend....twice! Will not likely listen to them on purpose for the rest of my days.
Re: PT. I respect much of the engineering work Steve Wilson has done over the past few years. But neither PT or his solo work has connected with me in any way. I saw PT live and they really came off as AOR compared to the other acts at the festival.
So...neither.

Wasn't gonna bother with this until i noticed the poll question. Good lyrics are great and very bad lyrics are annoying but lyrics are in general not of great importance to me. Pink Floyd were obviously blessed with having a really gifted lyricist while Porcupine Tree are one of the few bands with lyrics often cringeworthy enough to get in the way of the music (which isn't all that great to begin with).

Pink Floyd. The other band is imaginary.

That's a bit harsh. I can't remember Roger Waters writing lyrics about serial killers. | SW does seem to have a corner on that market. Blackest Eyes is so incredible. "A mother sings a lullaby to a child Sometime in the future the boy goes wild And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy A walk in the woods and I will try Something under the trees that made you cry It's so erotic when your make up runs"
