Argent: Conflicted Styles or Just Playing It Safe?

I've been taking a tour of Argent's back catalogue recently after many years away. I was never sure if Rod Argent and Russ Ballard split up songwriting styles, prog inflected vs. R&R, due to true artistic differences or simply to cover the bases and ensure a hit  single and sell some records. On reflection, probably a bit of both. Are there any old Argent fans that have an opinion on this?
