Topic: Ian Crichton Posted: September 15 2017 at 16:51 |
Ian Crichton of Saga whom is known for hes fluid neo clsssical and very adept sweep picking and unison soloing which he follows Jim Gilmour not per note. In a often time backlashing speeds and turns. He is very seldom mentioned in guitar diskusions or on shred guitar inkovation though i would suggest to look him up. Among the pinoeers of unison soloing in heavy pro. G.

Love him, a riff master, extraordinary soloist, and deeply underappreciated.

Ian's a great guitarist! Yes, he is savagely overlooked in the grand scheme of things with his angular solos, bold riffs, unison lines and his trademark trills.

Ian's great in that he's very precise and technical, but never comes across as if he ever struggles with anything, and never acts like he's showing off (i.e. he's so humble). He's great guitarist that looks like he's having fun most of the time. Definitely overlooked and underrated.

He's a very loyal and stable factor in the band aswell.
I hate to say he's underrated because every fan of every band everywhere and anytime says their favorite artist is underrated. But nobody ever, ever mentions Ian. I love him to bits, if he interplays with Gilmour, Sadler, Rochon, he's absolutely incredible.
I love his grungy solo cd's aswell.

Crichton is awesome. He can operate the whammy bar with his forearm while tapping (!!)
But I've never overlooked him. And I think that it was about Heads or Tales that I get the idea that producers said let's just let this shredder rip, and he seems to have become the focal point of the band.
It's like when they were discussing under-appreciated drummers. I named Jaki Liebezeit of Can. Nobody on the thread had mentioned him, and I searched the forum and couldn't find his name in a search. What can look unappreciated by one person can just have fallen out of mention.
Anytime I talk about Saga with non-proggers, I'm often going on about Crichton's astounding ability. If anybody doubts his ability HoT sold quite a few, just throw on Pitchman for them (even though I can't find it on Spotify!)

There are some sublime live versions of Pitchman aswell. Other songs where Ian really shines are:
- Humble Stance (duh) - Ice Nice - Sleeping World - Framed - Conversations - Catwalk (unabridged version) - Don't Look Down - Scarecrow - Giant - The Learning Tree - Fantastically Wrong - Corkentellis - Book of Lies
On the first 3 albums, the producer really underused Ian. The keyboards/synths are more upfront in the mix. Rupert Hine was the first that put Ian more upfront in the mix. That's why World's Apart and Heads or Tales have a bit more aggression
