Akkerman takes this one. I really like Latimer's guitar playing but Akkerman can get pretty wild.

Two great guitarists that I like and admire very much. Not by much, but Andy Latimer takes my vote, though Jan Akkerman is very, very close.

this---Jan is way more versatile and can play some heavy exciting stuff---more my taste

I rarely listen to Focus these days, I think they're great though I often listen to Camel, debut, Mirage and Moonmadness especially.

Andy boy due to more soaring guitar and rich melodies, plus vocals and flute. His guitar style is already superior (to me at least), but then he adds singing and a competent second instrument. More prolific in the songwriting and band leading departments as well.
Akkerman's good, but more singularly constrained to guitar, and not other areas, which is fine.
Even though they are both "guitar players", I'm including everything they have to offer.

Latimer does a mean Gilmour but Akkerman does it even better with those wafting melody lines on Hamburger Concerto. The title track and Birth are heartbreakingly beautiful. Kinda like Steve Hackett on steroids - he's even made the same kind of 'guitar-connoisseur albums' - just a little better imo.
That's not to say I don't dig Latimer's playing. The vote goes to Jan nonetheless.

Look, I think Jan Akkerman is an incredible player.
But he's up against THE best exponent of the art of extracting the most emotion and melody possible out of anything with 6 strings.
So no disrespect to Mr Akkerman, but my vote would have been the same if it had been anyone else pitched against Andy Latimer.
