I went back 10 pages into the archives and didn't see one, so I thought I'd throw this one out there... would love to read about the great concerts you've seen.

As an avid and frequent concert-goer, I've seen some really good ones over the decades.  Here's my Top 10:

1.  Magma, 2015.
2.  Tangerine Dream, 1986.
3.  Jean-Michel Jarre, 2017.
4.  Camel, 1997.
5.  Peter Gabriel, 2002.
6.  Porcupine Tree, 2010.
7.  King Crimson, 2014.
8.  Kraftwerk, 2002.
9.  Alan Parsons, 1994.
10.  John Renbourn, 2000.

I can barely name 10 prog concerts I've been to without repeating names, but I'll try (I live too far north for most bands!).

1. King Crimson, 2015
2. Rush, 2015
3. Steve Hackett, 2010
4. Primus, 2015
5. Yes, 2017
6. Van Der Graaf Generator, 2009
7. The Who, 2007
8. The Musical Box, 2010
9. Roger Hodgson, 2010
10. Renaissance, 2010

Saw Rush and KC multiple times, so I just listed my favorite show each of theirs.

Good question I'm not sure about all the years but they should be close.
Going with the one per artist format or it would be almost all Yes & Rush.
( I have the Spinal Tap List, It goes to 11 Wink 0

  • Rush - '90
  • Yes -'83
  • Renaissance - '82
  • Tull - '92
  • TSO - 2015
  • Steely Dan - 2015
  • Genesis - '86 (or '87)
  • ELP - '91
  • Paul McCartney - 2016
  • Toto (with Yes) - 2015
  • Police - 2007

Interesting - I also saw Tull in 1992 - I've seen them 9 times over the decades, but the '92 show ("A Little Light Music" tour) was special, and the best performance by them I had ever seen before or since.

Yes Albany NY 2002
Yes Jones Beach 2002
Yes Essex Junction Vt. 2004
Yes MSG NYC 2004
Yes Saratoga NY 2000
Genesis Albany NY 1975
Gentle Giant Albany NY 1976 (opened for Renaissance)
Allan Holdsworth Albany 1987(club called QE2, 2nd of two shows he did that night. Best bar show I'll ever see. There were about 40 people there.)
Robert Fripp and The League Of Crafty Guitarists Albany NY 2007
Peter Gabriel Berkeley Ca. 1983

The last few were very hard. Had to omit Yes/ Tales MSG 1974, Gentle Giant again in 1976, headlining in front of opener Dr. Feelgood - loudest show I've ever been to. Others as well, Steve Howe in 2008...difficult. Yes Union 1991 or 2...

I will allow this bit of a boast. By the time I was 17 I had seen Yes on tour with Tales and Genesis with The Lamb.

Not sure I could list my top ten, but I can definitely name the top two:

1) Peter Hammill solo at the Zeche in Bochum in the late 80s. He had already given 5 encores, and the roadies had already cleared the stage, yet the audience still wanted more. Finally he came back on stage, a towel around his neck, went to the very front and sang a beautiful rendition of "Again", without instrument or microphone. The audience was absolutely silent while he sang, but when he was finished there was a roar of applause. No-one wanted another encore; this was a magical moment that could not be topped.

The second one is not on my top list because of the concert itself but because of what happened before. Again it was a Peter Hammill concert, this time at the Krebelshof, a small venue in Worringen, a suburb of Cologne, in the late 80s or early 90s, most probably 1989 (I still had my hair back then; it started falling out in 1993). The concert was originally scheduled for the afternoon but was postponed a few hours. I did not know about the postponement and was hours too early. Since I was there by public transport and the bus went only once an hour on weekends I decided to stay and have a beer.

While I sat there sipping my beer Peter Hammill came out, sat at a table next to me and had a beer too. I decided to talk to him, but not like a fan talks to his star, just like any person to another person. We talked a while, and then he suggested we should go for a walk. We slowly walked the Alte Neusser Landstraße, which stretches from Southwest to Northeast in a straight line for a few kilometers, and talked about all kinds of things - math, physics, literature, Zen-Buddhism, art, classical music and lots of other stuff. After some kilometers we reached a bridge, where we decided to cross the road and walk back. The walk was over an hour long, maybe even close to two, and it was a most interesting talk. The concert was good (with band), but the memorable thing about it was this long walk and talk.

Wow, what a cool story. I met PH once briefly and he seemed very down to earth. It definitely didn't seem like he was caught up in playing the "rock star" role like many seem to.

^ yep agreed

I've only ever spoken/had a conversation to one musician associated with prog and that was the guitarist David O'List who once played in The Nice. Unfortunately his band had failed to turn up for the Prog festival that we were at so he was at the bar instead. It was an acquaintance and ELP fan Linda (she used to post as Three Fates on this site) who was already talking to him so I joined in. Very nice chap. He was very complimentary about Keith Emerson an I liked his comment that he decided not to take up the offer to join Roxy Music permanently (after doing some session work for them) because none of them were as talented as Keith. Ok he may have said that for my benefit but it was still a nice thing to say.Smile

I was there, too. Actually, before posting my list, I wrote down some 20-25 best gigs I could think of that were just "total experiences" and that one was on it. I then had to boil it down to 10 and just did it somehow; I like to play by the rules in these polls and if that means leaving out something as great as this, so be it anyway.

Too lazy to make a top 10 but Hammill would probably be on my list. Saw him 3 or 4 times live and one of the most intense moment i've experienced during a concert was his performance of 'Four Pails'. Took me by surprise as I never thought he would play that song and the whole audience (150-200) was totally captivated. One voice, one piano...no idea how he does it. Montreal 06 or 07.

awesome!  I guess it must have been the tour in support iof "The Visit", because she did "The Old Ways", which I had heard but never really noticed.  When she hits the peaks in the chorus I'm airborne.
