Just missed to add that if you oppose the "Duke" songs (opening / travels /endings), upbeat, dynamic and mostly progressive, as Collins tour life and friendship, to the more balladic songs where sadness reign supreme, you just have that opposition in a musician life as opposed to personal / family matters. "Please don't ask" is simply poignant under this light.

"and be damned..."

Like i said poor Phil, the rest of his career may had turned like a therapy...

45 years of prog listening and still movin'

Abacab by comparison, sounds like they turned up drunk to the studio, without any ideas and no producer, and just played what they felt at the time. It was a significant nosedive in quality. IMO.

"Wrong!" - John McLaughlin. You're obviously confusing it with We Can't Dance. Not only did that atrocity do the nosediving, but it accomplished the feat while diving off a 50-foot tower on the back of a horse named Rex. The documentary that accompanied it on the mid-2000's two disc set even attested to the fact that the boys really didn't have any ideas going into the studio.

Not 100% correct either as Fading Lights is the best Genesis prog track post Duke (it might even be the only one!)

Abacab does have Keep It Dark (quality!) but the butchered Dodo/Lurker is perhaps a pity.
