There are many here that I don't know, but from those I do know my favourites are Histoires sans paroles, Close to the Edge, Echoes, and Zarathustra. I guess today I'm in a mood for Histoires sans Paroles.

Echoes from this list for me - assuming just one song in the list for each artist, for me other potential epics include:
- Focus - Eruption (or Hamburger concerto) - Sky - Connecting Rooms (from first album) or FIFO (from second album) - Procol Harum - In Held 'Twas In I Starting a poll like this is certainly a good way of finding out about other epics though

How do you figure Histoire Sans Paroles to be a side-long track??

Snow Goose is separate tracks rather than side-long suites.

Nice selection, I always tend to go with the lesser known tracks.

Earth & Fire's 1971 "Song of the Marching Children" is glaringly missing. Lots of great mellotron and cool melodies. Jerney Kaagman was quite cute and cool back then too.
Here's sort of a crappy-quality excerpt from the side-long song. Better footage exists on their DVD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoQXhRCxILQ Edited by Boojieboy - October 04 2017 at 12:21 |

Of course Supper's Ready doesn't count because there's another track on that side. My pick would probably be Gates of Delirium.
Anyway, nice to see Nine Feet Underground on the list but what about Birdman by Mcdonald and Giles(I actually don't know it that well but know of it). Also, Eruption by Focus. I also like dabsong conshirtoe by Caravan(not sure it's an album side track though). Not sure what else. I think most of the well known ones have been mentioned. I don't see any modern tracks on there though. I guess it's difficult to pinpoint what is "sidelong" in the age of cds and digital musical.

All of the above to me not only flows perfecly but also has some of the best melodies and chord progressions ever composed by the Transatlantic guys (I know most of it is Neal's but I'm sure Roine and Pete also added their own flavors to it). Easily the winner.

Plague, though including Gates of Delirium or Tales side 1 or 3 would've made it a much harder decision

But they should - the Narrow Margin as brilliant. I also love Echoes, Song of Scheherazade and the terribly neglected Flight, the first section of which is amongst the best prog ever. But my absolute favourite side long epic is Midnight Mushrumps by Gryphon. I also think the two Focus epics (Eruption and Hamburger Concerto) are brilliant.

Ridiculous poll. I don't have 4 of these.........but still too many to choose from. Why not have 38 choices ?? Go on, make it easy !!!
( sorry, that's 5 I don't have - Canarios, Bubu, Capability Brown, After Crying and one other I can't recall....calls for another edit.....) Ubi Major............... Edited by Tom Ozric - October 05 2017 at 03:35 |
