Same with wapassou - messe en ré mineur and Snow Goose by Camel  :-)

well, the same is true for Nektar's "Remember the Future", which you included

two real underdogs - which wouldn't get many votes anyway even when eligible for this poll - are Headroom and Tyra both from FM's direct-to-disc album :) strange and wonderful!

The Ikon for me.
I was kind of tending toward that one.

But I had to go establishment and put another vote for Close to the Edge.

Hi,

Voted against the grain, as it would be a very tough list to include everything ... but what the heck ... I took the Capability Brown piece, as that happens to be a wonderful album and piece of music.

Ange - Ego et Deus
Amon Duul 2 - Yeti
Can - Bel Air
Focus - Eruption
Focus - Hamburger Concerto
Byzantium - Something You Said
Camel - Snow Goose
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge, Tubular Fun'eydom! (though Amarok is my number one here!)
Aphrodite's Child - 666 (outstanding thing, but way out there for too many folks!)
Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda da Vida
Wapassou - Messe en Re Minor
Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn
Cosmic Couriers - Cosmic Joke

(couple of things were mentioned here and there, I saw as I read on)
(hope you are not expecting LYRICS to carry the piece ... that's cheating!)

I'm having to look at every CD and LP in my collection now, just to find some more for this list ... but I don't think I can select a favorite ... there is too much good stuff out there, and it's hard for me not to think of "Thick as a Brick" or "Passion Play" as not conceptual pieces and how valuable they are ... I still would love to do a stage presentation of PP complete with ... you know what! And a good band, too! I might even invite Ian to the proceedings so he can sit back and ... cry ... some appreciation for more than a song!

Hard to include here, but Frank Zappa's 200 Motels should be listed, and if you have not heard, the Classical Version is stupendous, and the end piece is even more outrageously great. It's sort of like the thing that every choir has always wanted to do, for fun, that they couldn't, and the end result of that concert at UCLA was excellent. For pure music maniacs only that love Magic Theaters ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Close to the Edge - Yes. It would be interesting to see a poll with the big hitters not included, as there are some great tracks bubbling under the top 5. I've a soft spot for All of the Above by Transatlantic.

oops didn't see "Nine Feet Underground", which would have been my choice from the ones here.  I voted Nektar.  Other very honourable mentions would be CTTE and Scheherazade.  I agree that Earth and Fire would have fit well here.  And if "Adonis" by ANYONE's DAUGHTER had been here, I would have picked it without hesitation

I prophesy disaster and then I count the cost...

This is a list of some of the best music ever written (Echoes, Close to the Edge, Ikon, Sheherezade, Harmonium, Plague, Nine Feet...)

However, my two very favourite epics are not on this list: "Facelift" and "Moon in June" from Soft Machine's 'Third'
